Trudeau announces Amira Elghawaby as Canada's first representative to combat Islamophobia

Probably doesn't hurt that back in the days before central heating, Canadian winters being what they were, being an asshole could mean you'd freeze to death.

OK, this is not a complete solution, but can we get over the hard-man names for police task forces? Maybe cops inclined to abuse people would be less likely to volunteer for the FUZZY BUNNY squad or the DOPEY PUPPY team or the FOOTY PAJAMA task force. . .

Trudeau announces Amira Elghawaby as Canada's first representative to combat Islamophobia

I was distressed that Ryan Reynolds destroyed Green Lantern as a movie subject forever (forever = six months. It's a Hollywood thing). Then I got to thinking maybe he did us a favor. 'Scuse me, "favour."

OK, but is it natural that some bright spark will observe that X has a mildly beneficial or euphoric effect and say "Hey, I bet if we concentrate it to 10,000 times its naturally-occurring strength, it'll be amazing!"

We steal all your best actors and comedians. In our defense, we steal a lot of your worst ones, too.

Trudeau announces Amira Elghawaby as Canada's first representative to combat Islamophobia

I'd love to argue that, but. . . I'm not sure how. In all seriousness, I have to say that Canada, even considering its own mistakes and smaller "footprint" in the world, has done a better job than the U.S., overall, in providing all its people with peace, prosperity, and opportunity. Not...

Trudeau announces Amira Elghawaby as Canada's first representative to combat Islamophobia

It's hard to separate Canada and the U.S. So much of what you concern yourself with are U.S. issues. No, that's not a criticism. It's hardly surprising, considering the size, economy, culture, and proximity of the U.S. to Canada. However, I will point out that down hereabouts some folk like...

Flying under the influence. Tsk, tsk. Terrible. Justin should do something about it. This calls for a new ministry!

The perpetual dilemma. . . evil, or just a fucking idiot? It's the ancient rule "Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence."

Alcohol is. We have video evidence of apes getting shitfaced on rotting fruit and acting silly. Well, sillier.

Federally funded National Arts Centre event to allow only 'Black-identifying' theatregoers

Nope, not what I'm saying at all. But we end up at the same place, so I'm OK with it.

I learned in the service to be asleep vertical instead of horizontal. That's one of those "life lessons" that has come in handy more times than I can count.

Oh, I'm not saying that it being illegal is insignificant. Just that I think the ethos is more of a factor than the law. It's a hair-fine distinction, because the law (the basic stuff, not the highly technical, abstruse parts) is part of the cultural ethos.

I'm sure a lot of it is just normal variation in devotion. There's daily Mass attendees and "Christmas and Easter" Catholics. I've known Muslims who go to mosque two or three times a year (and some who don't go at all, but still call themselves Muslims). Certainly calling yourself this or...
