  • Hey KKeith, what area of the country are you in? If you're at all mechanically inclined you might consider the field of stationary engineering (operating boilers and other stationary equipment). It pays pretty good out in industry, but in government they don't pay quite as well but the bennies are nice. The field really has a natural built-in job security in Canada because as long as this is a cold country it will need people who can run and work on boilers.

    Now with the government paying less than industry, it's hard for us to get new people, but you sound like a good candidate since you'd be just as happy to have a job.

    Get your 4th Class, then 3rd Class Stationay Engineer Certificate and then apply to the government of Canada for a job.

    In the plant where I work (cfb borden) 80% of us are due to retire in the next 5 years.
