bhayne, "If we don't spend the $30 million on an inquiry, we'll be spending $60 million because politicians know they can get away with it!!"

Yes. And we don't even know for sure what he got away with. We need to know.

I thought there was only a 7 year statute of limitations for tax evasion? Can Mulroney be proven guilty and walk away because of the statute of limitations for his crime?
I don't believe Canada has a statute of limitations on criminal offences.

And WHAT exactly is Mulrooneys criminal offence?
Schreiber merely wants his 300K back, because Mulrooney didn't deliver.
Schreiber also wants to stay in Canada and therefore threatens to make heads roll.
The real shame is that a Canadian Prime Minister, who is so proud of the name his father passed on to him, engages in shady deals in order to get his hands on some extra money.
It is not that we Canadians treated him cheap, no, we paid for whatever Mila wanted, we paid forinstance for their totally unnecessary "Good Bye-Trip" around the world!
They truly lived at the trough!
Here is a tidbit of interest from the Conrad Black trial:
"Watching Brian Mulroney ooze through his testimony before a federal ethics committee this morning had a certain surreal quality, given that only three days before, his name was raised in a Chicago courtroom as an avatar of probity, his letter providing proof positive of Conrad Black’s impeccable character and unsuitability for incarceration."

Birds of a feather stick together!

Hey guys whether or not there is a statutory limit or not the fact remains that, Mulroney's finance minister at the time Michel Wilson had passed a law that made even bribe money declarable income, and lying Brian felt that he was exempt. So no law for the elite and throw you in jail if you do different, what a bunch of sorry examples of democracy and morality.

What idiot would want the lieberals back in power? What a joke!!Stephanie Dion representing Canada on the world stage!!

I feel we did good under Chretien. Dion is not a big talker, maybe a silent mover, though.

Back to Brian and Karlheinz....

it's going to be a limited inquiry, IF at all. All depends what Stephen decides. If he is satisfied with the findings of the Ethics Committee, then there is no reason to probe further, unless the opposition screams.

This is what Paullind said a fellow forum particepent, a short while ego. And we are looking at some fun Candian polits coming up

The liberals are just making fools of themselves. Nobody wants to see tax dollars spent on a 20 year old witch hunt over an insignificant incident. The Sponsorship Scandel is much fresher on our minds.

Paullind, the Libs are for freedom, the Tories on the last election came on to ask Canada didn't you have enough of the sleazy liberals, vote us in so we can clean up the political liberal corruption in Ottawa, while in the back room Harper was trying to out perform the libs by bribing one of their own so they can overturn the libs, how sleazy is that?
So in the next coming up election get ready for the big change, the Tories are all ready running for cover and they will be punished in the next coming up election.:angryfire:

I am surprised that we are going to spend $30 million in hearings and inquiries to investigate whether Brian took the $300K. Even more laughable after the previous Liberal govt elected to pay Brian an additional $2.1 million.

He took the $300K. He lied about it. But there is no evidence that will hold up in court. Asside from the political points attempted to be made here, there is no issue. Its done. Brian will never be PM again. Lets move on.

As to majority .... does anyone really want Dion in charge?

$30 million is a bargain if in the end we get more accountability in our government. Seeing a former PM in prison might be a good incentive for future leaders to keep their hands out of the cookie jar.

You just said it genius, he took the money, lied about in COURT and received public money in compensation for his perjury. There is an issue, not only did he and some of his close collegues profit from influence peddling, he used the courts to intimidate the Liberal government into backing down and pay him even more money. I can think of no better way to set an example of holding our leaders to a higher standard than revealing ALL of Mulroneys shading dealings and prosecuting him and anyone else involved to the full extent of the law.

Maybe there's so much corruption and illegal activity in this country because of the poor example by Mulroney and others. If the law doesn't apply equally to everyone, it applies to no one. Want more law and order? then show that even the rich and powerful must answer for their actions. Connie Black is paying his debt to society, $30 million isn't a lot to see Mulroney do the same. Then we can move on.

I'd prefer Dion to a leader and a party than seems hell bent on a one party state. We already have a press that needs to ask the PM if it can ask him questions, a PM that has undermined our democractic traditions by creating chaos in Parliment (when he lets it sit) confusion in the minds of constitiuents over who their real representatives are, using a deadly war for political profit and much more. Dion would be a breath of fresh air after Harpers cynical power grab. The global warming issue is still in the background as the conservatives have done a good job forcing it there. It would be wonderful to have a PM who actually takes it seriously.
