I'm a bit ashamed because I just realized that this comet has already been around the Sun and it is heading back out again. Usually a comet will "bloom" so to speak, on the way into the inner system. Gas or ice will boil off to make a tail, and we all have something to talk about for a month or two. Comet 17P Holmes will likely last for another day or two at the current brightness and then it will fade away till next time.

May I ask: what distance (away from the sun) is required so that the dirty snow will boil? And will the snow on its surface melt, before its central snow?
Moreover, what makes such a relatively small rocky object appear so luminous from such far distance?

What makes this comet so visible or luminous is the sunlight reflecting off the comet's gas/dust cloud that is now about the size of Jupiter.
There is no set distance. It also depends on what kind of ices are being melted or boiled off. Water ice.....C02 dry ice.....and also the reflectivity of the comet's surface.

I don't intend to annoy or bother you, but what makes you sure to give such explanations like dry co2 ice, and leave benind the straightforward ideas?
And is it the head and body of the comet that is usually luminous or is it the tail?
Does the comet now consist of a head and body cloud which is bigger than Jupiter, or is the tail that is usually so large?

eanassir.

As you may or may not know, the so-called tail of the comet always faces away from the sun. The gases and dust that are boiled off are usually whisked off by the solar wind to form a tail.
a previous post:The comet is currently heading away from the sun, and was quite dim before the outburst... about mag 18. It could have spontaneously cracked and let a large bit of junk and gas out, or maybe it got hit by something... nobody knows for sure yet. Have to measure the orbits of the comet and the cloud for the next few weeks to see what happened.

Perhaps you could tell me what would be a straight forward explanation.

Thank you, and my greetings to your son who has taken these nice images of the comet with his camera, and best regards.
