Wow, just wow.

I have lived, worked, reported and shopped in the area for, well, a very long time and I have nowhere near the jaded, prejudiced view of the area you folks have.

Using different adjectives, a tourist could write just as damning a report on Kerrisdale.

But your classist, jaded minds could never imagine that.

Pangloss
Nonsense Pangloss. You've prejudiced yourself to believe that since you shopped and reported in it it must be decent place. It's not.

Good grief, you guys, your only talking about a very small section of Vancouver, and all cities have
their yukky areas, so what. The rest of Vancouver is wonderful, a beautiful happy city, I love it.
When I was just 10 yrs old I used to take the interurban or a bus and meet my Dad at Main and Carroll
which used to be the old B.C. Electric Building, and that area was a skid roe even then. My dad lived
in some scummy hotel, as he was a alchoholic and blended right in. He and I had great times when
I visited him, went to Stanley Park, went to Cricket Games at Brockton Oval, and many other interesting outings, then he would put me back on the train or bus, and home I would go to New
Westminster. I've never been worried about being there, noone will bother you, they're too busy
trying to exist, and they appreciate five bucks in their hand once in a while too.
Yeah, I know there are many more drug addicts than at that time, but I just read too much paranoia here.

For years, I lived there, Kreskin. I was last there in August; I will be back in a matter of weeks.

Quit being such a scaredy cat.

I don't think someone would want to travel from Ireland to see the downtown eastside. There are much better places to be in Vancouver.

That's right Kreskin - all the decent people have full time, well paying jobs, no learning disabilities, blah, blah, blah.

All the disgusting people just happen to be poor.

Move along, no class politics here.

Tin foil over your windows, Kreskin?

OK you win Pangloss. Everyone should fly to Vancouver and spend quality cultural time on East Hastings, between Cambie and Main. It will be an unforgettable thrill of a lifetime.

Hi everyone!
Some friends and I are visiting Vancouver this summer from Ireland and we might be living in East Vancouver. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what its like, is that a good area for gigs, restaurants, night life etc. Also if there are any nice areas to live within East Vancouver we'd love to hear about them!
Cheers

Aside from Hastings and Main (which I believe you should at least drive by to see what everyone's talking about), there are lots of places that are accessible to you from East Vancouver.

Here's a long list, but that's because there are lots to do. It's by no means a complete list. It's just stuff that I've done over the years and stuff that I plan to do this summer.

1. Visit The Keg... get some steak. If money is no object, try Hy's or Gothams.
2. Views and lookout points. Grouse Mountain has an excellent unobstructed view. The lookout point going up to Cypress Bowl is nice too. The top of Harbour Centre has nice views from within the city. Stanely Park has a nice view of downtown.
3. Visit Nature... take a bus to Whistler and go mountain biking, fishing, golfing, or ziplining. You get to see what it's like before 2010 Olympics. Walk the seawall in Stanley Park... If you're hard core you can go hiking at Golden Ears Park. For a weekend trip, you must go to Banff, Alberta. Drive a little and you can go horseback riding in Maple Ridge.
4. Nightclubs, there are few in Gastown.
5. Golfing... it's a big thing over here and they are everywhere. Westwood Plateau and Swan-e-set are the ones I recommend.
6. Take the BC ferry to Victoria and visit the Museum and Parliament buildings. Drive up the coast and you can go on some fishing tours.
7. Starlight Dinner Train... a little expensive, but it's a train ride with dinner.
8. Depending on when you are in Vancouver during the summer, you may be able to catch the HSBC Celebration of Light Fireworks... For 2007, it is on July 25 (Spain), July 28 (Canada), August 1 (China) and August 4 (Grand Finale).
9. Again, depending on when you are here, August 10-12th is the Abbotsford Airshow... here you can comment on how much better the Eurofighter is to the F-18.
10. If you're an animal lover, there is the Langely Zoo and the Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park.
11. Beaches - lots in Vancouver. Spanish Banks, English Bay, some in West Vancouver... White Rock... lots.
12. Restaurants - lots of Chinese, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, French, Italian... the list goes on. For recommendations? Hmm... Chinese - Kirin or Sun Sui Wah in Richmond. Indian - Vij's on Granville and 11th, Korean - Gogung in Westwood Plateau, Japanese - Tojo's, Thai - Thai house, Vietnamese - Pho'99, French - Lumiere on Broadway, Italian - Macaroni Grill (although the last time I went it wasn't that great anymore).
13. There is the Richmond nightmarket near Bridgeport - May 18th to Oct 8th.
14. Mcdonalds - everywhere. So you can compare how much bigger the big macs are over here.
15. Sports - FIFA WorldCup UNDER 20 July 1st and July 4th at the Royal Athletic Park. Probably not the same calibre to what you are used to seeing.
16. Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) and Playland - Playland open now until Sept. PNE is August 18th to Sept. 3rd.

That's it.

My question is why did you choose East Vancouver as a place to stay?

LOL, your sarcasm is funny Kreskin!

I have been to Vancouver lots and lots, and I have never walked on East Hastings, but every time I went there we would drive down that street to look at the Hooker Fountain and the homeless people screaming at each other. Funny its so bad with a police station rate near there...

Its worth seeing... in a locked vehicle of course... I just like to see what the lower class peoples look like.

I also call it Hooker Valley in this other region.

There was a time when someone could walk between Cambie and Main and not be too concerned but today it's a circus. Even in a locked car. As a buddy and I drove through there one day, a guy came out of nowhere to end up on the hood of my car.

It is funny that a police station is right near there. It doesn't appear to make a difference.

Yeah I absolutely hate those window washers, you tell them no, but they keep washing the front window and they want money and your split on what to do.

I usually drive off...

It seems you only went there to stare and be entertained, not for anything constructive, as helping
out or ?, so I guess you got what you deserved.

well first off thanks for all the suggestions and advice from everyone that was really helpful

My question is why did you choose East Vancouver as a place to stay?

well I didnt really have it in mind, it was the only place where I found a furnished apartment for the time we need it, so we took it. Could turn out to be a good idea or a bad one we'll see

Thanks again for your replies everyone!

It wouldn't matter where you choose to live....crime is everwhere....some criminals just have more expensive tastes....criminals travel around...so don't think that by living in a swanky neighbourhood you will be spared. Take some standard precautions and more than likely you'll be fine. For example; women with purses are easy targets. Try carrying your belongings in a waist pack or keeping your wallet hidden in a pocket...leave the purse at home.

Walk tall and confident and you are less likely to be a target.
