I don't need a really great computer, but if at some time I go with Vista, the 64 bit processor is likely a good idea. The new system can handle up to 8 gig of RAM though I don't know why I would need it.

Pick your self up a version of Vista 64 bit when it is released and stable, it's the only version of windows which can use more then 4gb of RAM.
I started with an MDG pc. The only thing that's left built by MDG is the case and the floppy drive. Asus P5GD1 m/board, Asus nVidea 256 mB vidcard, Audigy 2 soundcard, Pentium 4 @ 3.9 gHz, Ultra 550Watt p/s, 2 3.5" fans, 19" 16/10 aspect LCD monitor, etc.

I'm not surprised. MDG is a shaft you kinda outfit. The quality of there stuff is low. My brother in law got one against my better jugement. He has replaced the power supply, floppy drive and the mother board. That is pretty much the whole damn thing. I still have a comp from 1997 and 98 running today with no repairs. And to boot the Windows disc they supplied would not load the entire programme. It said we needed to go to an MDG outlet to have the problem fixed. BS, I fixed the problem by getting a proper copy of Windows Media Centre, and installing it myself. His machine never worked better.
Sorry for the rant but I needed to dis MDG. THEY SUCK!

Not a problem. I think they suck, too. The only decent parts were the MS keyboard and the Samsung monitor. It was something cheap to start with. I think it cost me a couple or three hundred. After that I just took my time replacing the crap with good parts at wholesale prices.

Ya, Hope you didn't take any of that personally, I just had a bad experience with them. If you saw the e-mails I exchanged with their tech support... well you would understand. Sorry Gil.
What bothers me about MDG is they will void your warranty if you remove the side panel from the case. So you can't even add more RAM without losing your warranty, pretty lame in my opnion.
Wow - that is so contrary re a friends computer - she bought a MDG puter about a year ago - I don't know the specs but - she runs an internet based business - and has absolutely no complaints - though I must admit I hear more complaints about that firm than I do kudos.
So, is there a bottom line re MDG - their prices are certainly attractive - their equipment seems to garner more complaints than most - anyone. . . .
Maybe if you spec the right thing they can do it but their package deals, I dunno?...
what you want to avoid with MDG is their flyer specials. They say they will double your RAM, Hard drive, and upgrade your video card for "free". In most cases, what they do is, upgrade the decent base equipment with total crap. According to MDG, removing a discrete graphics card and replacing it with integrated graphics is an upgrade... They also like to advertise dual core processors as being the speed of the cpu x2 (2.00ghz x2=4ghz) which is totally misleading since they run Parallel

I agree. By flyer special you mean everything they sell except if you get one custom made. Then who's to say, if you don't specify, that they won't put in an inferior power supply. They will make an extra $10 bucks by giving you the crap model. And then it has been proven by their policies and my experience that once you by an MDG you are on your own.

The new CPU overclocks pretty good, I have it running stable at 2.80ghz now, up from 2.15. I just had to lock my memory at 800mhz and increased the front side bus up to 350mhz. Under full load the CPU temp hovers around 40 degrees celcius, which isn't too bad. Hopefully I'll push it past 3ghz tomorrow.

You list Vista home premium at $120.00 I assume that is an update. I just paid $250.00 for XP home because I wasn't sure of the lineage of my copy of win 98. Does MS check closely on these things? The reason I ask is that My wife wants to change to XP.

I bought an OEM version of the OS. I get no support from microsoft with it which accounts for the lower price. The normal retial version is probably double what I paid.

I have an AMD 2600 and I tend to have a bit of a heat problem. I've added a fan up front but if I don't crack the case and blow out the heat sink at least once a month then I start to get a higher CPU temp. I never had this problem with my intels. Is this something they have addressed in the last few years. I'm in the market so I want something trouble free.
how do you know what your CPU temp is? and what's a good temp to have?
i'm currently running the only valid version of windows i ever had. I've never had any trouble.
the software that comes with your motherboard should have some sort of utility which will spit out cpu temp, motherboard temp etc. A good cpu temp is kinda subjective, depening on the type of CPU. Generally speaking though, your CPU shouldn't be exceeding 50 degrees celcius under load. My cpu runs around 30 degrees at idle, 35-40 under load.
