UN report says climate change man-made

SETH BORENSTEIN
Associated Press

PARIS — The warning from a top panel of international scientists was blunt and dire: “warming of the climate system is unequivocal,” the cause is “very likely” man-made, and the menace will “continue for centuries.”
Authors of the 21-page report released Friday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change placed the onus on governments to stop prevaricating and take action.
Among other things, the report highlighted “increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and (a) rising global mean sea level.”
It said man-made emissions of greenhouse gases can already be blamed for fewer cold days, hotter nights, killer heat waves, floods and heavy rains, devastating droughts and an increase in hurricane and tropical storm strength — particularly in the Atlantic Ocean.

The message to be taken home from the report is “it's later than we think,” panel co-chair Susan Solomon of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press in an interview.
The report and the scientists who wrote it called the document conservative. It used only peer reviewed published science and was edited by representatives of 113 governments that also had to agree to every word, including those opposed to measures like the Koyoto Protocol to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
Although it is a snapshot of where the world stands with regard to global warming and where it is heading, it does not tell governments what to do.
Yet if nothing is done, the world is looking at more than one million dead and hundreds of billions of dollars in costs adapting to a warmer world with more extreme weather, study co-author Kevin Trenberth, director of climate analysis at the U.S National Center for Atmospheric Research, said in an interview.
Another report by the panel later this year will address the most effective measures for slowing global warming.
If it looks bad now, the harmful effects during the 21st century “would very likely be larger than those observed during the 20th century,” the report said.
The panel predicted temperature rises of 1.1 to 6.4 Celsius by the year 2100. That was a wider range than in the 2001 report, although the panel also said its best estimate was rises of 1.8 to 4 C.
The projected effects of global warming would vary in different parts of the globe. The closer to the poles, the higher the temperature spikes, according to the report. Dramatic and noticeable temperature spikes are likely to be seen within 22 years in most of the Northern Hemisphere, the report showed. Northern Africa and other places will see dramatically less rainfall.
And that's just average temperature increases and rainfall amounts, something that doesn't affect people much.
People experience the harshest of global warming during extreme weather events — heat waves, droughts, floods, and hurricanes — said study co-author Philip Jones of Britain's University of East Anglia. And those events have increased dramatically in the past decade and will get even worse in the future, he said.
On sea levels, the report projects rises of 18 to 59 centimetres by the end of the century. An additional 10 to 20 centimetres is possible if the recent, surprising melting of polar ice sheets continues.
The next step is up to public officials, scientists said. “I want to see action — not messages,” said Swiss scientist Thomas Stocker, a co-author.
Achim Steiner, executive director of the UN Environment Program, said it was “critical that we look at this report ... as a moment where the focus of attention will shift from whether climate change is linked to human activity, whether the science is sufficient, to what on earth are we going to do about it.”
“The public should not sit back and say ‘There's nothing we can do,'” Mr. Steiner added. “Anyone who would continue to risk inaction on the basis of the evidence presented here will one day in the history books be considered irresponsible.”
Gerry Meehl of the U.S. atmospheric research centre warned that continued global warming could eventually lead to an “ice-free Arctic.”
When that happened 125,000 years ago, seas rose between four and six metres. That is looking like a real possibility for the 22nd century, the report said, but some scientists fear much of that may happen before the end of the 21st Century.
The report said no matter how much civilization slows or reduces its greenhouse gas emissions, global warming and sea-level rise will continue for centuries.
“This is just not something you can stop. We're just going to have to live with it,” Mr. Trenberth said. “We're creating a different planet. If you were to come back in 100 years' time, we'll have a different climate.”
Scientists worry that world leaders will take that message in the wrong way and throw up their hands, Mr. Trenberth said. That would be wrong, he said. Instead, the scientists urged leaders to reduce emissions and also adapt to a warmer world with wilder weather.
As the IPCC report was being released, environmental activists rappelled off a Paris bridge and draped a banner over a statue used often as a popular gauge of whether the Seine River is running high.
“Alarm bells are ringing. The world must wake up to the threat,” said Catherine Pearce of Friends of the Earth.

I posted this thread because there are still a lot of people who couch their commentas on climate change with "if there is global warming". When scientists from a hundred and thirty countries get together to tell us that there is absolutely no doubt that the world is warming up, and that we are responsible, I think we should listen to them.

looks like we're screwed

That, is one of the messages they are not sending. We can still improve our situation by cutting back on the burning of fossil fuels and energy conservation measures. Just don't buy waterfront property in Bangladesh.

Not hardly. Humans are pretty adaptive. Besides I read a report that said the amount of water in the air will probably increase in areas. So that will filter out a lot of radiation from Sol. So we may have a planet with no ice, 2 kinds of areas: either desert or tropical rainforests, poor biodiversification, and a whole pile of people dying or scrambling to move to a "better place". Fresh water may become a tough thing to locate at times, too.

The signs were that these guys would come up with that observation. Both Science and SciAm had an idea of what the general gist of the study was going to conclude.

There have been a lot of smaller studies over the last twenty years or so that came up with the same conclusions. This information has been there if one cared to look.

It certainly doesn't look good for future generations if we can't get our collective act together soon. I can hear the economists now, saying it will kill the economy. I say like Gilbert said, we're adaptable, our economies can recover, reversing the effects of climate instability if nothing is done on the other hand....

I can't see how the economies would suffer. Perhaps some companies, but where an oil company could fail, for instance, an alternative energy company could sprout. Probably more recycling companies to come. Companies that offer better water collectors and filters. Even companies that offer consulting in various areas of ecological interest .........

Funny how Canada, a country that when people around the world infrequently think of us they think of nature when they do, yet we have been so slow to politically catch on to global warming. Organic foods are more popular, we want nature to be all around us and for it to be green and clean.

When it comes to global warming, it is game over for the naysayers.

OK so we're all agreed (at last) that global warming is a problem NOW and must be stopped SOON.

so what do we do? how exactly do we stop the entire globe from pumping out giant amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases?

I don't think GW can be stopped by us. I think evetually things will balance out and then get cooler, but it'll take a while.

Keeping pressure on politicians, refusing to buy or reduce the use of harmful things, sell your stocks in oil companies and buy stocks in alt-energy companies, etc. It starts in your own back yard.

rough estimate 1000-10,000 years in my mind. problem is it's a runaway process in many theories. and there's evidence similar things have happened before, leading to ice ages.

I also think we COULD stop it if only we could persuade the whole 6000000000 of the world's population to think a bit. I know that's pretty much impossible but that's the most frustrating thing

Did you know that Canada is the only one of the North American countries to sign on to Kyoto. China, India, and the U.S. are the main hold outs. I think Canada's was one of the first signatures on the Accord.

Canada, the U.S., and Australia, are three of the worst producers of greenhouse gas, so it is going to cost us some money, but as someone said, we can also make some money if we are smart.

I hope this is approperiate but how about a 13 year old's veiw on the topic.
This is a school speech by my daughter.

Hot summer and just as hot winters , the only down side seems to be a green Christmas. Well did you ever think of all the days you could have been skating or skiing instead of sitting inside watching it rain. Global warming- it seems to be the only thing on peoples minds lately. Recycle here, save a tree there, but how much are we really doing? Patience just doesn’t seem to be available anymore.
Don’t you just love the look of brown smog in the morning, the crisp and choking car exhaust and rotting garbage fuming around your feet. All of these thing are, or will become greenhouse gasses. Most greenhouse gasses are Carbon dioxides. It is produced from oil and coal emissions. It can be removed by plants, but a lot is still left over. Methane is also a strong part of greenhouse gases, it mainly comes from oil, natural gases and mostly rotting garbage. Hrydrofluorocarbons , perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride are the strongest gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect. They are also know as Flourinated gases . Fluoranated gases are used as substitutes for more dangerous ozone-depleting substances. The gases are holding in much to much unwanted heat.
And this extra heat is really doing something to the earth , you could say its making a real dent on the world. Did you know that Greenland’s ice cap is more than 2 miles thick, and is melting 3 times as fast ever recorded in history! With all this new water the oceans are rising. Sea level rising can lead to many things. Costal flooding risks will increase by a great number. Storms normally not strong enough to do to much damage to mainland cities will be able to travel farther with more power. The ocean has taken in 20 times more heat than the atmosphere, this will cause the sea levels to rise even more. It’s already climbed mor than an inch in the past 10 years!
Despite all of the cost, Canada is putting forth a great effort to help slow the effects of climate change. The Canadian government is working on projects such as raising awareness about climate change and helping to develop new and greater technologies to combat on going climate change. They are introducing policies that will reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. They are now planning to close a coal burning factory in eastern Ontario in the future. The government is also helping still developing countries prepare for large changes in climate such as flooding in low lying areas and long droughts in countries with spares water already,
Climate change is real and it’s not going to stop on it’s own, we have to take some action!
Try and not take as many drives, if you do, car pool.
Wear weather appropriate clothes so you don’t have to waste energy on heating and air conditioning.
Remember to recycle. You don’t always need to throw things in the trash
Overall global warming should be on our minds, it’s something that is happening now and will keep happening if we don’t try to change it. Sea levels and gases with weird names don’t seem like much now but it is amounting to something new everyday. As the poller ice cap shrinks the climate changes, as the temperature rises the climate changes and so do we. This is affecting everyone and everything so why not try and stop it!
