NDP to ask integrity commissioner to investigate Ford video of Washington trip

Ontario’s NDP and Liberal leaders cried foul Thursday over a trip Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford took to Washington, D.C., in the middle of a snap election he called, saying he’s touting that visit for partisan purposes.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles said she is planning to write to the province’s integrity commissioner to ask him to look into a campaign-style video Ford’s team produced using clips from the trip.

“Ford is in fact using his taxpayer funded Washington photo op for partisan purposes,” Stiles wrote in a social media post. “Doug Ford keeps finding new and expensive ways to erode our democracy.”

Ford and the country’s other premiers travelled to Washington this week to push back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to impose steep tariffs on Canadian goods. The Progressive Conservatives have said the party paid travel expenses for Ford and campaign staff.

Ford made the trip as premier, but he is also in the midst of campaigning in a snap provincial election that he called.

Ahead of the trip, integrity commissioner J. David Wake wrote that it would not violate the caretaker convention — a principle that during an election the only government business that should continue is in a few instances, including routine matters or those that are urgent and in the public interest.

Wake wrote that in the context of current U.S.-Canada political relations, the trip meets the urgent and public interest criteria. However, he said that such work was appropriate “provided that the activities are not then used for partisan purposes.”

Upon Ford’s return to Ontario, his social media accounts posted a video showing clips of him in Washington that ended with the Progressive Conservative party logo.

It was taken down and reposted without the logo shortly after Stiles said she would raise it with the integrity commissioner. Stiles suggested she still views Ford as using the trip for partisan gain.

“I don’t think anyone is fooled by that (removal of the logo), and I think it is a sure sign of guilt as well,” she said at a campaign stop in Sudbury.

“I think that he knows, and they know, they did something wrong, and yet that never seems to stop them.”

Stiles was announcing her northern platform ahead of the leaders meeting Friday for a northern-focused debate in North Bay. The NDP is promising more doctors and affordable homes for the north, as well as widening highways and strengthening truck driver training.

A spokesperson for Ford described the video as “footage of the premier being the premier” and says those types of clips are routinely used in political social media content.

Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie said the trip is not appropriate in the middle of an election.

“Why isn’t his focus the people of Ontario and protecting us all of the time, not just some of the time when it’s convenient for him?” she said at a campaign stop in the Barrie area.

“The only job he’s gone there to protect is his own. Clearly, that’s why he’s called an early and unnecessary and expensive election in Ontario.”

That's funny. A dipper claiming someone else is eroding democracy.

The only value I see in this election is proof that we must have fixed elections that cannot be changed on a politician's whim. For all levels of government.

NDP candidate withdraws from Toronto riding in hopes of stopping a PC win
The Tories have held the riding provincially since 2018, with the Liberals representing it before that since 1999

The candidate nominated by the Ontario NDP for Toronto riding Eglinton-Lawrence has pulled out of the election and is throwing her support behind the Liberals in a likely tight race.

Natasha Doyle-Merrick wrote in a statement that Eglinton-Lawrence is a “clear two-party contest” and she is stepping aside in the hopes of preventing another Progressive Conservative win.

“I got into politics for the people, and it would be a disservice for me to keep my name on the ballot knowing that the race in Eglinton-Lawrence is pivotal,” Doyle-Merrick wrote.

“Many residents cannot afford another four years of an Ontario Conservative government.”

The Tories have held the riding provincially since 2018, with the Liberals representing it before that since 1999, and the Liberals came within about 500 votes of Progressive Conservative candidate Robin Martin, who is not running this time.

Doyle-Merrick ran for the NDP in the riding in 2022, and received about 3,800 votes, compared to more than 16,000 for the Liberal and PC candidates.

The Liberals also lost a candidate Thursday, the day of Elections Ontario’s deadline for candidate nominations, and now have no candidate in Windsor West, which is expected to be a fight between the NDP and Progressive Conservatives.

The Liberals did not explain candidate Moe Chehab’s withdrawal, simply saying it was “too bad” and that the party has a strong slate of candidates across the province.

The Progressive Conservatives, with dozens of incumbents, announced their full slate of 124 candidates in late January, and the Green Party of Ontario has also nominated a full slate.

Vic Fedeli 'fine' after North Bay crash, Brampton trucker charged

A Brampton trucker has been charged after a Friday morning crash involving Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli, who is “OK,” according to his campaign office.

“He was stopped at a traffic light at the Highway 11/17 bypass and hit from behind by a tractor trailer. Car was pushed through the intersection,” his team said.

Fedeli was taken to hospital “as a precaution,” his campaign manager William Ferguson said.

“He’s fine, in great spirits and he has now been released,” Ferguson said.

A commercial motor vehicle driver has been charged following the rear-end collision.

Ontario Provincial Police and North Bay Ambulance responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision at 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of Hwy. 11 and O’Brien St.

A 35-year-old commercial motor vehicle driver from Brampton was charged with following too closely.

I get the feeling Bonnie Cromby would blame the PCs for a rainy day.

Unless they really needed the rain, in which case she would give the CommieNaziFagtardLibruls the credit. (Hereafter CNFTLs.)

Which proves she's not ready for prime time. When she can do BOTH in the same breath, she moves into the professional league in politics.

These are the same retards whining about Ford moving the Ontario Science Center to Ontario Place, ignoring the fact that such a move would free up much needed space for housing in Toronto, meaning more property taxes as well. Seeing as how Chairwoman Chow has cranked them up more than 15% in just 2 years.

"You either define the moment, or the moment defines you."

Ford defined the moment. With Trudeau being a lame duck sitting PM, all eyes were on Ontario. Can't think of a better person to go toe-to-toe with Trump. The Donald has a better hand of course, but Ford is smarter.

We'll see how this Presidential debacle will unfold over the next 4 years...and Canada's response to it all.
