Simple fact is that both sides have tried to restrict speech.
There are conservatives, and then there are right wing nuts that may vote conservative because that is the party that they can at least partly understand. Your horseshoe political spectrum comes to mind.
There are a lot of us that get blanketed with the conservative handle, because we are fiscal conservatives, but lean leftish? ( another bad term) on social issues.
Book banning is one subject I strongly disagree with, but there are lots of advocates on both sides. Seems to me, if you don't believe what the book says, prove your point. This most especially applies to the residential school debacle. We have a quasi judicial body that recommended making it a criminal offence to disagree with their version of events. No proof of their story is required.
