Had a relative that caught that years ago in Mexico….. high-end resort too. Sicker than a dog for a long stretch…& by the time she was better she lost 30 or 40 pounds. Crazy.

Shigella causes disease in primates, but not in other mammals; it is the causative agent of human shigellosis. It is only naturally found in humans and gorillas. During infection, it typically causes dysentery.

Shigella is a leading cause of bacterial diarrhea worldwide, with 80–165 million annual cases (estimated) and 74,000 to 600,000 deaths. It is one of the top four pathogens that cause moderate-to-severe diarrhea in African and South Asian children.

Anyway, to avoid stomach upset while travelling, the relative above that I mentioned goes almost vegetarian when she travels. That one trip it bit her in the arse. She didn’t eat anything off resort, and she didn’t eat meat outside of Canada that trip. The best guess is that something on that buffet at the resort came from a field that had been fertilized with human faeces.

That’s supposedly a no no….But somebody cheated.
