German football legend Beckenbauer, loser in 1966, dies aged 78

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer has died aged 78.

Beckenbauer was part of the West Germany team which lost against England in the 1966 World Cup Final but also part of the West Germany team which won the 1974 World Cup.

He was part of the West Germany team that won Euro '72.

He was also manager of Germany when they won the 1990 World Cup.

He also won the European Cup three times with Bayern Munich: in 1974, 1975 and 1976.

I wish I was old enough to have watched, live, a match featuring both Beckenbauer and Pele. That must have been awe-inspiring.

Despite Beckenbauer and Co losing against Bobby Moore's England side in the 1966 World Cup Final the two became good friends afterwards. They often played chess together.

Bobby died of cancer in 1993 and now his good friend Beckenbauer has gone.

It was a great match somewhere around 1973 , Beckenbauer was so smooth and classy in his ball control and distribution . Pele on his side was awesome as well , the banana free kick should have been impossible . A six or eight man wall from the right side sliced into the top left corner .
