Toronto Police say a woman who was set on fire on a TTC bus on June 17 has died of her injuries.
Const. Alex Li, a police spokesman, said she died Tuesday and homicide officers have been notified.
Last month, police said a 33-year-old man had been arrested after allegedly setting the woman on fire on a bus at Kipling Station in what was being called a suspected hate crime.
Police alleged a man poured a liquid substance on the unidentified woman shortly after noon that day and then lit the liquid on fire.
Tenzin Norbu, of Toronto, was charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, common nuisance endangering the lives, safety or health of the public, and mischief over $5000 interfering with property.
Li says those charges were to be upgraded as a result of her death.
A GoFundMe campaign set up by the woman’s sister, Dawa, said she was one the way to work “as a professional caregiver when she was attacked by a stranger who threw lighter fluid on her and set her on fire.”
“My sister is a caregiver who has lived a life of service to others. At this point, we really need support from all of you on her long journey ahead. Please help us with what you can and pray with us for her recovery,” she wrote in the campaign launched over the weekend, before her sister’s death.
