Defiant Brits across the nation are pulling together today to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Today commemorates the official surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces on May 8 1945, following the Second World War. And while large-scale public events may not be able to go ahead, patriotic neighbourhoods are making the best of the situation by holding tea parties while observing social distancing, and hosting events in memory of those who laid down their lives for their country. Many were able to wave from their balconies and gardens as the RAF staged flypasts, with the Red Arrows soaring through the sky above Buckingham Palace and the London Eye and Typhoon fighter jets flying over Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. Poignant commemorations this morning were led by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, who each laid a wreath at a memorial near Balmoral. Veterans and members of the public, unable to gather by their local war memorials as normal, quietly reflected in their own homes as millions across the country fell silence and observed a two-minute silence.
