Defiant Brits celebrate and commemorate VE Day in lockdown: Prince Charles leads solemn two-minute tribute, Red Arrows fly over Buckingham Palace and a deserted London as people make the best of a very special bank holiday

Defiant Brits across the nation are pulling together today to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Today commemorates the official surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces on May 8 1945, following the Second World War. And while large-scale public events may not be able to go ahead, patriotic neighbourhoods are making the best of the situation by holding tea parties while observing social distancing, and hosting events in memory of those who laid down their lives for their country. Many were able to wave from their balconies and gardens as the RAF staged flypasts, with the Red Arrows soaring through the sky above Buckingham Palace and the London Eye and Typhoon fighter jets flying over Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. Poignant commemorations this morning were led by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, who each laid a wreath at a memorial near Balmoral. Veterans and members of the public, unable to gather by their local war memorials as normal, quietly reflected in their own homes as millions across the country fell silence and observed a two-minute silence.

RAF Red Arrows fly over London as Britain commemorates the 75th VE Day:

Boris Johnson has released a video to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

The Prime Minister paid tribute to the country's soldiers, sailors and airmen who fought across the world to secure peace in World War II.

Mr Johnson also remembered the many women who defended Britain against air raids, worked in factories, ran the hospitals and broke enemy codes.

He said that because of them, "hundreds of millions of people live in peace and freedom":

The Queen delivers her VE Day address as the United Kingdom remains under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Remembering VE day 75 years ago, the Queen reflects on her father's words from that day and pays tribute to those who laid down their lives.

Defiant? WTF are they being defiant about? Appears they are obeying the health regs and still having a grand old time. BTW, congrats on the 'bank' holiday thing.

Bank Holiday would normally have been last Monday - the annual May Day Bank Holiday - but they moved it four days later this year so that's it on the milestone VE Day.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge talk to World War Two veterans about their VE Day celebrations

Following the Queen's address, people were invited to stand on their doorsteps and sing Dame Vera Lynn's 'We'll Meet Again' (I like how they aren't obeying the lockdown)
