Ukraine investigators open case into Joe Biden's role in firing of top prosecutor

Ukrainian investigators have begun an inquiry into then-Vice President Joe Biden over allegations that he pressured officials into firing a top prosecutor in 2016.

A case revolving around Biden, now a Democratic candidate for president, was opened by the State Bureau of Investigations on a court order following a January appeal for action by Viktor Shokin, the dismissed prosecutor general's lawyer, Oleksandr Teleshetsky, told the Washington Post.
“They need to investigate this. They have no other alternative. They are required to do this by the decision of the court. If they don't, then they violate a whole string of procedural norms,” Teleshetsky said.
The State Bureau of Investigations confirmed an inquiry was opened. The case mentions only a U.S. citizen and does not refer to Biden by name.

Daria Kaleniuk, director of Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Action Center, downplayed the significance of the matter, saying that Ukrainian law requires state investigators to open a case on a court order even if they don't believe there is enough evidence. “If I was a SBI investigator, I would close that case immediately,” she said.
Shokin, who was dismissed in March 2016 after about a year in office by then-President Petro Poroshenko, claims he was ousted because he wanted to investigate the lucrative role Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden, had on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings. President Trump, his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, and other allies also claim Biden improperly used his position as vice president to pressure Ukraine to fire Shokin to protect his son from an investigation into Burisma.
The elder Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. loan guarantees if Ukraine did not fire its top prosecutor, who was criticized by the West for not doing enough to crack down on corruption. The European Union, the International Monetary Fund, and other allies had the same objective, and Biden was repeating U.S. policy that had been set out by Washington’s ambassador to Kyiv in the preceding months and was briefed by White House staff just ahead of the trip.

Biden says there is no "credibility" to the claims of corruption, but his critics have seized on video of a statement the former vice president made in January 2018, where he boasted to members of a panel hosted by the Council of Foreign Relations that he ordered the Ukrainian government to fire Shokin or the White House would renege on a commitment to provide aid. “I looked at them and said: ‘I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money.’ Well, son of a bitch. He got fired," Biden said.
The matter got wrapped up into the impeachment saga after Trump pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate the Bidens and other Democrats in a July 25 phone call in which he also appeared to praise Shokin and call his removal "unfair," according to a transcript released by the White House. Democrats cried foul over what they interpreted to be a "quid pro quo."
At issue was whether the president improperly pressured Ukraine to announce investigations by withholding military aid and dangling the possibility of a White House meeting between the Trump and Zelensky. Trump was impeached by the Democratic-controlled House on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, but he was acquitted by the GOP-led Senate earlier this month. Zelensky himself has repeatedly stated that he felt no pressure from Trump to open an investigation into the Bidens.
Earlier this month, Zelensky fired his chief of staff and replaced him with Andriy Yermak, an aide who met with Giuliani, who also met with Shokin as far back as late 2018 as he sought political dirt on the Bidens.

I guess not quite debunked yet

So now Bloomberg is out and supporting Biden as has literally every other candidate.

The party once again circling the wagons around the center which is a shame and is what created the NDP in Canada.

Is there no room in America for progressive ideas?

Now an article that has a little less defending of Biden

Ukraine opens criminal investigation ... of Joe Biden!

Targets quid pro quo in firing of prosecutor probing son Hunter's firm

Ukraine has launched a criminal case against former Vice President Joe Biden alleging he pressured authorities to force the resignation of Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin.
The Interfax-Ukraine news agency, quoting Shokin's lawyer, reported the country's State Bureau of Investigations opened the case under an appeal by Shokin.
Shokin's lawyer, Oleksandr Teleshetsky, said at a press conference Feb. 27 that the charge is interfering in the work of an official of a law enforcement agency.
Shokin included Biden's name in his motion, which prompted the opening of the case, Interfax said. But the investigation itself mentions only a "U.S. citizen."

The lawyer said the SBI is also handling criminal cases opened in response to Shokin's motion on charges of disclosing pretrial probe secrets to employees of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.
He explained that Biden is their suspect in three different criminal offenses, which have been merged into one case.

Teleshetsky said he's asking the the Prosecutor General's Office to seek the assistance of the U.S. in the investigation.
"We'll definitely do this. This is one of the priorities in this criminal investigation, because this case can't be investigated without involving mechanisms of international legal cooperation," he said.
"Judging by remarks Biden allowed himself to make in public, Viktor Mykolayovych Shokin has sufficient grounds to believe that it was [Biden] who masterminded and, to a certain extent, perpetrated those criminal offenses to which Shokin alerted the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine," the lawyer said.
Teleshetsky noted that Greek law enforcement agencies are investigating Shokin's mercury poisoning in 2019. He said Shokin links the incident to Biden.
"The results of this investigation are not yet available today. We don't have sufficient grounds to ... file motions and requests with the law enforcement agencies of Greece before they establish the objective truth in all circumstances, he said. "Possibly, they will appear tomorrow or the day after tomorrow."

Hunter Biden's receipt of more than $3 million from the natural gas firm Burisma Holdings while his father oversaw a U.S. effort to address corruption in Ukraine was a subject of the July 25 phone call at the center of the articles of impeachment against President Trump.
Trump mentioned to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in the call that Joe Biden openly boasted of threatening to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid to Ukraine if then-Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko did not fire the country's general prosecutor, who was investigating Burisma at the time.

Democrats contend Trump's request that Zelensky assist Attorney General William Barr in looking into potential corruption in Hunter Biden's position amounts to digging up dirt on a political rival, insisting there was "no basis" for any investigation.
But the White House presented evidence in the Senate impeachment trial to bolster its argument that it was a legitimate matter of public interest. The president's lawyers argued, for one, that two witnesses called by the House Democrats testified that the Obama State Department expressed concern that the Biden arrangement was a conflict of interest.
According to State Department documents, Burisma invoked Hunter Biden's name when it pressed the Obama State Department to end a corruption investigation into the company.
Peter Schweizer, who exposed the Hunter Biden-Ukraine deal in his 2018 book "Secret Empires," said in an interview with SiriusXMs Breitbart News Daily that the key to understanding the matter is the timing.
"The timing is clear: February of 2014, Putin moves into Crimea, that creates this whole crisis," he said. "In March of 2014, Joe is point person on Ukraine policy. Within three weeks, Ukrainians suddenly decide, 'Hey Hunter Biden is the guy, the expert, we want to join this company. And yeah, we need to pay him a million dollars a year.'

"You look at that and think, 'This is absurd.' ... It's not like he was advising Ukraine in 2005," said Schweizer.
His new book, "Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America’s Progressive Elite," presents evidence that five members of Biden's family profited from his position as vice president of the United States.
Schweizer also recalled that when the Obama administration "pivoted" its foreign policy to Asia, Hunter Biden accompanied his father on a trip to Beijing on Air Force Two.
"Joe goes over there on one of his first significant trips, and what does he do? His son comes with him, and 10 days after the trip, the son suddenly announces this billon-and-a-half-dollar private equity deal," Schweizer said.

"It’s clear, it's crystal clear what's going on."

Long read but interesting none the less

Interesting? Maybe not so interesting if you take a closer look. According to the director of Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Action Center (as stated in one of your posts) it's a nothing burger. Turns out that Ukrainian law states a case must be opened on a court order even if there is not enough evidence to pursue it. The director went on to say that if she was an investigator with the SBI, she would drop the case.

Should Biden be held accountable if he is found to have broken any laws? Yep, 100%. But this is looking more like a case of nothing to see here.

There will need to be a long investigation by the DOJ, every stone must be uncovered with wide sweeping nets. Anyone associated with Biden must be interviewed in detail.

I agree, get to the bottom of it once and for all. A joint investigation with the US and Ukraine is called for. If no party has anything to hide then a full investigation should be welcomed by all. Considering who is the current head of the DOJ though, there will be those who will no doubt question the outcome of such an investigation.

But it doesn't change, it's the same claims he and his council have been making for some time. Nonetheless it will play out as it will. If he's found guilty, he should rightfully pay, if there is no case to be made against him, let it rest.

Republicans lean into Biden probe as he surges in Democratic primary

Even Politico dribbles a little truth once in awhile

Some officials and even Biden’s Democratic allies agreed that the younger Biden’s decision to take a highly paid position on Burisma’s board while his father conducted U.S. foreign policy in Ukraine raised the appearance of a conflict of interest. It raised some flags among State Department officials at the time, too, though none suggested Biden took any actions contrary to U.S. foreign policy objectives in Ukraine.
Republicans have pointed to those conflict-of-interest concerns as the basis for probing the matter.

"If no party has anything to hide then a full investigation should be welcomed by all"

EXACTLY!

All of Biden's family and friends should be thoroughly investigated. All of their bank records, personal holdings, emails, phone records, everything. A complete audit is needed. This should extend to his time as VP and members of the last Administration.

And of course, any illegal activity that is found not to be related to the investigation should be passed off to other agents for additional scrutiny.
