"[Germany's] Federal Council wants to better protect the EU symbols such as the flag and the anthem from slurs. In a bill passed on Friday, the State Chamber proposes a new offence, which provides for the contempt of the EU flag or anthem up to three years' imprisonment or a fine. Under German law, Merkel should be charged for disrespecting her country's flag. Doesn't surprise me, though, that she prefers the EU flag to her own country's flag.

Canada, for example, has no laws prohibiting flag burning or desecration. Acts of this nature are forms of expression protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Great Britain likewise has no laws against the desecration of national flags.
