RCMP believes officer paid for underage sex workers overseas - Ottawa - CBC News

I get if true, then he technically did not violate Canadian law since the crime would have occurred outside of Canada's jurisdiction. But why in the world wouldn't the RCMP contact the police in the country in which the crime allegedly occurred and offered to extradite him for trial in that country on request?

If Canada doesn't have an extradition treaty with that country, then let's make an exception in this case unless there are reasonable grounds to believe that a rogue state might make a false accusation against him to abuse this policy.

Just because he's a Canadian citizen, he should not be able to escape punishment for crimes he commits abroad so easily.

It's against Canadian law to travel out of the country to have sex with children-just the travelling is a crime/people have already been charged/convicted & sentenced for it.

You have no idea what's happening in your own country something I've noticed in the past.

Sorry, I forgot. You're right that Canada does have some extra-jurisdictional laws including those pertaining to child molestation. But no, I'm not ignorant of the fact that child molestation occurs in Canada, but I was talking here about a Canadian doing so abroad.

In practical terms though, it would seem more efficient to have a Canadian tried in the jurisdiction where the crime allegedly took place since that gives the judge easier access to witnesses and other evidence. It would be extremely difficult to prove the guilt of a Canadian in a Canadian court in Canada of a crime allegedly committed abroad simply since the judge would have much less access to proof. In fact, not only does this reduce the chance of a criminal being convicted but also increases the risk of an innocent being wrongfully convicted.
