Tariffs are a wealth transfer?

Actually, tariffs can transfer wealth in a sense. To take an example:

Imagine a company with a plant in NYC and one in Vancouver BC. With open borders, the company would produce products in NYC for Eastern North America and in Vancouver for Western North America. Once tariffs go up though, then the US plant sells all over the US and the Canadian plant all over Canada. On the one hand, it pushes prices up due to more transportation costs. Greater transportation distances to market might harm the environment too. However, it can also create more busy-work jobs for truckers who might otherwise be unemployed. It may transfer wealth in that sense. But the greater inefficiencies and overhead costs undo that transfer though. So in reality, everyone loses to a degree.

Oh! Now I get it. When you said "ours", what you really meant was "eastern Canada's.

I think western Canada subsidizes eastern Canada enough.

That's what you're told by your famous populists, anyway. It's an old tradition in the West going back generations.

I guess the idea is that it will make the wealthy poorer without making the poor wealthier?

Well IMO it is to protect important industry's within the country that may go away when mounted by pressure from foreign companies dumping cheap similar products into the country. Main reasons usually are local economy dependent, large work force protection, copyright infringement, product quality, original country product distinction, etc. etc.

Cannuck probably knows better so he can explain to us the real reason :)

I favour free trade because it benefits consumers.

correct me if I misunderstood you: you oppose free tariffs because you think they might benefit Eastern Canada?

No. I oppose tarrifs because they are unnecessary and cost taxpayers money. It's just government sticking it's nose into business and picking winners and losers. In Canada, the government just happens to equate "winners" with eastern companies and industries.

You still have to explain the transfer of wealth from West to East through Tariffs though please inform me on how it works

Um, how would you even be subject to tariffs on Bombardier products in the first place? Are you confusing bail-outs with tariffs?

Ask twin moose. He/she was the one that suggested tarrifs should be used to protect "our" manufacturers and then, when pressed cited Bombardier as one of "our" manufacturers.

You don't read very well do you? You asked who we as taxpayers support that's when I listed companies that received bail outs and then followed up with that has nothing to do with Tariffs. Then proceeded to ask you how Tariffs are wealth transfer to the East which you have not explained to me yet, so can you explain to me now please, I'm dyeing to know, sitting on pins and needles for your expertise.
