Hardcore Marvel fan launches petition to erect Deadpool statue in Regina
Deadpool has been a massive box office smash, giving Ryan Reynolds the hit he’s been waiting for in the form of the biggest R-rated opening weekend ever.
But Regina, Saskatchewan may just be giving the film a little more love than moviegoers, with hopes of erecting a statue in the masked anti-hero’s honour after the beloved character unexpectedly revealed in the film that the city is his hometown when he charmingly said, "I’m Wade Wilson from Regina, Saskatchewan. Regina, the town that rhymes with fun.” (You can thank Mick Jagger for that joke, by the way.)
One big fan in particular, Luke Oliver, has set up multiple petitions to realize this dream, one of which has already amassed nearly 2,000 signatures.
“Why this issue is important is self-explanatory and I don’t feel it’s necessary to even convince anybody of this,” Oliver wrote. “We, citizens of Regina, and citizens of Earth in general should be convinced as soon as we found out that Deadpool is from Regina! …We need to stand proud of being a Marvel Superheroes hometown. Regina has been home to many great people: Leslie Nielsen, Ryan Getzlaf, Wolfcop, the list goes on… But at the end of the day, the most important person from Regina: DEADPOOL.”
Regina has never sounded more fun.
