First-degree murder charges laid in Mac's slayings

EDMONTON - Police have laid first-degree murder charges against three suspects in a pair of Mac’s Convenience store slayings that shook Edmonton Friday.
On Saturday, Edmonton Police Service homicide detectives charged a 13-year-old boy and two men aged 24 and 27, each with two counts of first-degree murder as well as being disguised with intent, and robbery with a prohibited restricted firearm.
Police also confirmed the identity of the second victim, 41-year-old Ricky Massin Cenabre.
Two Mac’s clerks died early Friday morning after being shot during separate robberies that police chief Rod Knecht described as “barbaric and gratuitous.”
The first victim -- Karanpal Singh Bhangu, 35 -- died in hospital after being shot in the stomach while working at the Mac’s store near 32 Ave. and 82 St., with police dispatched after an emergency alarm was pulled around 3:30 a.m.
The second case was reported via a 911 call from a citizen minutes later, around 3:43 a.m., with Cenabre dead at the Mac’s scene near 108 Street and 61 Avenue.
Knecht said video evidence from the stores showed neither of the victims showed any sign of resistance or aggression toward the masked suspects. He also said the amount of money in the Mac’s tills at that time of morning would have been “minimal.”
The three suspects, all known to police, were arrested later that day in a dramatic police takedown on Whitemud Drive after their stolen vehicle crashed under the Terwillegar Drive overpass.

In addition to the aforementioned charges, 24-year-old Laylin Delorme has also been charged with two counts of possession of a loaded prohibited restricted firearm and possessing a prohibited firearm, and one count of dangerous driving, criminal flight, and possession of stolen property over $5,000.
Colton Steinhauer, 27, was also charged with one count each of possession of a weapon, possession of a loaded prohibited restricted firearm, and possessing a prohibited firearm.
The 13-year-old was also charged with two counts of breach of undertaking.

Edmonton Filipino man killed in Mac's slayings remembered as a "humble" man

An Edmonton Filipino man killed in a pair of convenience store hold-ups is being remembered by those who knew him as a “humble” man.
On Saturday, police identified 41-year-old Ricky Massin Cenabre as the second victim killed during separate robberies at two Mac’s convenience stores in south Edmonton on Friday.
“He was just a simple, humble guy, with a simple dream – the Canadian dream, as we call it,” said Richard Vale, who works as a sales manager at Mayfield Toyota, 10220-170 St. NW.
Vale says Cenabre came in to the dealership to buy a Toyota RAV4 in January 2015. It turns out Cenabre and Vale, as well as another sales manager at the dealership, are all from the same area in the Philippines.
Cenabre was born in the province of Bohol, while his common law wife, Editha Cenabre, was born in the province of Cebu. Together, they have a 16-year-old son, says Vale. Cenabre was working trying to get his wife and kid into Canada to build a life in Edmonton.
After purchasing the car, Vale and Cenabre kept in touch. They also stayed in touch with Editha, who first informed Vale that Ricky had been killed.
Vale says he was “disappointed” when he heard the news.
“It's a nonsense type of murder...only for a few bucks here and there,” said Vale.
Vale has set up a GoFundMe page to Cenabre's family back home in the Philippines, where Vale will personally deliver the proceeds to the family.
“The community is grieving over it and that's why we're trying to help whatever we can, in our own little way,” said Vale, who will personally deliver the funds to Editha when he heads back to the Philippines in January.

Meanwhile, Edmontonians have been pouring their hearts into a similar funding campaign launched to help the family of Karanpal Singh Bhangu, 35, who died in hospital after being shot in the stomach while working at the Mac’s store near 32 Ave. and 82 St.
A GoFundMe campaign launched on Friday has helped to raise $27,000. The proceeds from the fund will go towards the Bhangu family, including Bhangu's wife Kiran and their son Royce.

Edmontonians gripped by grief after two men were killed in city armed robberies are giving back to the victims' families.
A GoFundMe page set up online by “The Bhangu’s family at Progressive Academy” has already garnered over $6,000 in donations after 35-year-old Karanpal Singh Bhangu, and a 41-year-old man who has not yet been named, were shot and killed during separate robberies at two Mac’s convenience stores in south Edmonton on Friday.
“We are all saddened by the tragic and senseless shooting death of Karanpal Bhangu,” reads the page. “Karanpal and his son, Royce, recently immigrated from India to join his wife Kiran and begin a new life in Canada. Let’s all join together to support Kiran and Royce and let them know that they have an entire community behind them in this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, another GoFundMe page created by Harkirat Singh Bawa, is raising money to be split between the families of the two victims.
“With it being so close to Christmas, these two families are feeling tremendous heartache and trying to grieve,” wrote Bawa.
The page has garnered donations totalling just over $1,100 from 15 different people, including Arundeep Sandhu, who’s uncle Dilbag Sandhu, who was also a Mac’s store clerk, was gunned down by two men on June 17, 2005. A reward remains in place to help crack the unsolved case.
“My heart breaks to learn of two senseless murders last night at southside convenience stores in Edmonton,” wrote Sandhu, on Facebook.“It’s difficult to hear of these without thinking of my own uncle, who was murdered at the Mac’s in Minchau ten years ago.”
Some of those who have donated to the page left statements offering condolences to the families and calling for safer work environments for overnight workers.
“Horrendous act. God give Their families strength to deal with such a great loss,” wrote Akul Sethi.
Another post written by Jignesh Patel said, “Nothing can fill the loss of loved one. We need to have more secure working environment.”
