Man carrying knife on Parliament Hill arrested

A man carrying a concealed knife has been arrested outside Parliament Hill's Centre Block in Ottawa.

The man was apprehended by the Parliamentary Protective Service today.

"The Parliamentary Protective Service apprehended a male for carrying a concealed knife outside of Centre Block," said Cpl. Brigitte Mineault, a media relations officer with the RCMP, in an email to CBC News. "The subject is in custody."

Cpl. Valerie Thibodeau, a different media relations officer with the RCMP, told CBC News that charges were pending.

The Parliamentary Protective Service was created in the wake of the Oct. 22, 2014, shooting on Parliament Hill.

That day, gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau ran onto the grounds, hijacked a ministerial car and stormed Centre Block with a hunting rifle and knife, after having shot dead a Canadian Forces corporal at the National War Memorial across the street.

Following the attack, there was criticism about confusion and lack of security co-ordination during the incident.

The RCMP had been responsible for security on the grounds of Parliament Hill, while the House of Commons and Senate had separate protective services inside the building.

The Parliamentary Protective Service, which assumed control of Hill security in June, reports to the RCMP National Division, "with accountability to the Speakers of the House of Commons and the Senate."

The April federal budget committed $36 million over two years to improve security on Parliament Hill.

I was carrying my pocket knife in the parliament buildings in Ottawa just this past September, this thread is a non-story.

Agreed. I pretty much always carry a "concealed" (i.e., in my pocket) knife.

There may be reasons why this guy was particularly threatening, but the story doesn't. say. So "non-story" is exactly the right word for it. Coulda been anything from a nutbar waving around a bayonet to just a normal guy with (gasp, shock, horror) a pocket knife.

AIEEEEEE! A deadly weapon! Terrorism! Terrorism!

But yet, some malcontents took over three airplanes with utility knives, whodathunkit
But yet, people have hurt and even killed other people with their fists. Should possession of a fist be grounds for arrest?

Please note that neither Walter nor I are saying the police were wrong. We have raised the possibility that they were absolutely right. We are simply saying that the story does not say enough to judge, and is therefore a non-story.

Actually, we're criticizing the CBC's reporting here, not the cops.

It does say the knife was concealed but it doesn't go into any detail about how they found out.

Usually they just release an initial report and there would be follow up if interest warrants.

As I pointed out earlier, I routinely carry a "concealed" knife, i.e., a pocketknife in my pocket.

If you insist on swallowing this story whole, with its implications that this was a dangerous person with a dangerous weapon and ill intent, I can't stop you. But remember what I just said in another thread about "healthy scepticism?"

All pocket knives are concealed until you take it out of your pocket and pull out the blade.

I don't.

Like I said, it's just an initial report.

Dude arrested for carrying a knife.

Stay tuned as we find out more.

Pleasure being on the same side here, Walter.

I give you full credit. We can be pretty harsh to each other when we disagree. That we don't blindly hate each other just 'cuz is nice.
