Richard Gwyn's excellent biography of Canada's preeminent nation builder, Nation Maker: Sir John A. Macdonald: His Life, Our Times, shows that the issue of amalgamation with U.S. was present as a motivating force in the formation of Canada and in Confederation. It always had some rump support amongst those who thought they could profit from it AND a vast consensus of resistance and repulsion to the idea amongst Canadians in general.
The division between American and Canadian cultures is radical and irreconcilable, if subtly illustrated. The issue has never totally retreated in the U.S. where the concept of Manifest Destiny is still a force in the American identity. Canadian recalcitrance to joining 'the greatest nation on earth' is source of perplexity and befuddlement amongst its supporters.
The fact is that borders between our nations are never going to be breached. A far more likely manifestation of the U.S. expansionist ambitions is to the South, with a loose federation extending down to the Isthmus of Panama, resembling initially the EU, with no borders or restrictions of movement of people.
Canada's destiny is in the North. It won't happen in our lifetime.. or our grandchildrens lifetime.. but ultimately i think the borders will be rationalized with Canada incorporating Alaska and Greenland as the tansepts of its cathedral.
North American will then be formed of two contiguous nations. One to the North, and one to the South.. divided at the 49th Parallel.
