It's easy to dismiss the power of a good pope but I want to remind people that pope John Paul II was possibly the single most influential person in bringing about the fall of communism. Certainly that is what his legacy will be 500 years from now and I admire the man greatly for his accomplishments in this regard.
If the current pope, who is no geopolitical slouch himself, made the environment a pillar of his papacy, particularly given that many of the victims of environmental degradation are the poorest and most defenseless, I reckon it would have a huge positive impact on the movement over the next 20 years.
