DNA study ‘unmasks’ Jack the Ripper

19th century British serial killer Jack the Ripper has reportedly been identified using high-tech DNA technology called ‘vacuuming’. The DNA came from the shawl of one of his victim, according to a UK ‘armchair detective.’

48-year-old Russell Edwards stated that Aaron Kosminski, a 23-year-old Polish immigrant, was “definitely, categorically and absolutely” responsible for the chilling string of deaths in 1888 in London.

In 2007, Edwards purchased a blood-stained shawl reportedly belonging to one of the killer’s victims, Catherine Eddows, at an auction in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The shawl was found next to the Eddows’ mutilated corpse, and was kept by a policeman as a gift for his wife. It is said, though, that the officer’s wife didn’t appreciate the blood-stained shawl and didn’t even try to clean it.

“I’ve got the only piece of forensic evidence in the whole history of the case,” Edwards said.

“I’ve spent 14 years working on it, and we have definitively solved the mystery of who Jack the Ripper was,” Edwards added, as cited by The Guardian.

In the book ‘Naming Jack the Ripper’ set to be published in Australia this week by Pan Macmillan, Edwards names Kosminski as the Ripper and describes the stunning technology that helped to nail him.

Edwards asked Jari Louhelainen, an expert in molecular biology, for help. Louhelainen used cutting-edge technology to discover traces of the woman’s DNA on the shawl – as well as the DNA of her possible killer.

The scientist extracted 126-year-old DNA samples from the material using a process called “vacuuming” and compared it with DNA from descendants of Eddowes and the suspect Kosminski, with both proving a perfect match. In Kosminski’s case, it was the DNA sample from a female descendant of his sister.

The process took about three and a half years.

“When we discovered the truth it was the most amazing feeling of my entire life,” Edwards said.

The ‘armchair detective’ from north London was initially “captivated” by Jack the Ripper’s mystery, and attempted to solve the case in his free time.

Other experts on Jack the Ripper doubt the findings, though.

Richard Cobb, who runs Jack the Ripper conventions and tours, told The Times that the blood-stained shawl had been touched by so many over more than a century that the DNA samples are now unreliable.

“The shawl has been openly handled by loads of people and been touched, breathed on, spat upon,” Cobb said.

Jack the Ripper brutally killed at least five women, cut their throats, removed some of their internal organs and left the mutilated bodies in alleyways in Whitechapel.

There were six main suspects in the case, including some from the highest echelons of English society at the time, like The Duke of Clarence. However, there is evidence that police viewed Kosminski as the chief suspect.

Eight years ago, the Metropolitan Police's Crime Museum received a copy of the memoir of a top officer, in which Chief Inspector Donald Swanson, who was the original officer in charge of the Ripper probe, had made handwritten notes.

The final words he wrote were: "Kosminski was the suspect."

Kosminski was a Polish Jewish immigrant who, escaping from persecution by Poland’s Russian rulers, came with his family to England in 1881 and lived in Mile End. He spent the last year of his life in a string of lunatic asylums, where he died in 1899 of gangrene.

That's a bit of a contradiction.

Basically Hitler did it? Not like the lad would be a customer or anything. How much money was spent on this when the culprit might be a Royal and the truth would never see the light of day anyway. RIP Diana.

I'll take the "fact" that Kosminski was Jack the Ripper with a pinch of salt. Just because that shawl may have had Kosminski's DNA on it doesn't prove he was the killer.

I think the Jack the Ripper case will forever remain unsolved.

Theories abound that Jack the Ripper, the world's first modern serial killer and the world's most famous serial killer (which is a bit ironic considering we don't actually know who Jack the Ripper was), was actually a woman - Jill the Ripper - and that she was never caught because the police were looking for a man.

My favourite one, and the creepiest, is that Jack the Ripper and the mysterious fire-breathing, clawed creature Springheeled Jack, which could jump huge distances, was a contemporary of Jack the Ripper and, like the Ripper, liked attacking women, were actually one and the same! Jsck the Ripper was the mysterious Springheeled Jack.

Another theory states simply that Jack the Ripper didn't exist. That each of the women were killed by a different person.

The newsworthy item then becomes that the print media become part of the crime solving process in that the events are made known over a wide area so 'tips' can lead to arrests. Not in Jack's case but in the 385 other crimes that were reported and witnesses found. In typical fashion the Brits can't leave well enough alone and no the media helps the criminals get clean away with the most vicious crimes.

Hitler wasn't born until five months after the fifth and final canonical victim (the known five but there may have been more) of Jack the Ripper, an Irishwoman by the name of Mary Jane Kelly.

Hitler may have been many things, but he certainly wasn't Jack the Ripper.

For a newly arrived Polish immigrant who probably never saw the inside of a school room Kosminski sure was a good writer, speller, and had a great knowledge of science and anatomy.

Hey Blackie,

Since my childhood I was always fascinated by this story and have read several books and numerous articles on the subject. It's been a while since I've done any reading or watched any tv shows on the subject. But I do remember this: Kosminksi was a Jew (and we all know of Europe's ready tendency to blame Jews - in fact they did so more than Republicans blame everything on Obama and the Democrats), he came from an impoverished background and dressed in threadbare clothes, lived in a decrepit home in crime ridden Whitechapel, was known for erratic behavior, and had been institutionalized several times. This means he had to have been under watch by either police or by neighbors.

All my past readings on the subject revealed that the culprit was sharply dressed, had extensive knowledge of medicine/anatomy as befits a doctor or other medical profession, readily escaped detection because of his appearance and ready access to a coach or carriage, and wrote letters in good handwriting which reflects scholarship.

An ignorant, uneducated poor man could not have written such clever lines, had access to quick transport, or be able to leave town unnoticed so readily.

I have always felt that Kosminski was always targeted by Jew hating apologists who have tried to deflect criticism from the police and from politicians or others who may have been forced to look bad in light of these crimes.

This illustration was said to be on a wall in London but was later erased due to political and other concerns:

Putting the blame on an ignorant, degenerate Jew is just too "convenient" for me. I have always felt this way about the case and remain so.

DNA after a 125 years is so degraded.. and the chain of custody of any evidence so compromised that this just seems another in a long list of (money making) theories.

I still like the one that it was the Duke of Clarence.. first son of Edward VII and heir to the throne who died at age 28, purportedly from syphilis and general dissolution.
