that CTV Global News filed with the CBC to find out what the latter paid to broadcast the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Even though the CBC is a government institution and thus is supposed to be transparent to the taxpayers who fund it, what CTV received was less than informative:
What we got back was 162 pages of redactions.

They weren't completely blank. But save for boilerplate, they may as well have been: All specifics - not only numbers, but the most basic terms of the agreement and draft agreements - had been scrubbed. So have many of the details of emails and an internal powerpoint presentation.
Correction: EBD pointed out to me that I mistakenly referenced the FOI coming from CTV but it was in fact from Global News. My apologies.

I'd like to know how money CBC celebrities it takes to film or describe privileged money sponges having fun in the snow visiting a far away exotic money location and how money veterans had to be cut off to get them there and how is the money caviar and wine.

Gvt sponsored celebrities?

How about Adrienne Clarkson, you might remember that she absolutely needed to have the taxpayers pay for a 'cultural exchange' trip to Sweden for her and a dozen of her closest personal friends... Mind you, when rebuked for her excessive budget, she casually mentioned that the skating party for the local kids in the community would have to be cancelled.

What a douche

It's not just teh CBC. This government is intensely secretive in general. Although CSEC seems very interested in everything we're up to.

They are a crown corporation that puts them slightly at arms length
Secondly I would not expect them to give that information they are in
a competitive bid with the other networks. I prefer CBC coverage to
CTV or others anyway. Don't watch much of it but some and that is
hockey. The game is watered down from the NHL version so not as
interesting As for showing figures I don't think that should apply here

Louder please were having trouble with your pick up.

CBC Radio is disgraceful rubbish twenty four seven LGBT freaks, hourly Holocaust reminders and global warming lunatics. Russia bad, Russia hates gays, Russia got no human rights, they say, meanwhile, they, pay AL Queada to rape Syrian children so their parents can select a democratic, or else, future.

Given that they apparently accepted a huge price cut, the IOC might be putting more pressure on them to keep quiet on the number to try to prevent setting this number as a precedent.

The numbers will all come out eventually though.

CTV won a biding war vs CBC for the Vancouver and London games (I'm sure the Vancouver games alone made up for what they paid for the rights) After the London Olympics where done CBC won the bid for the Sochi 2014 and Brazil 2016 Games. After the Brazil games the rights for the next 2 Olympics will be up for biding again.

Well, at least the CBC get the gold medal for solid coverage.

And the best part: No Brian Williams.

How much coverage each Country will be broadcasting

What! We're paying for fifteen hundred hours of prime time to cover snow related events on the other side of the world while many places in Canada need more snow removal equipment. This is insane and should be stopped right now. We can play in the snow right here in our own winter wonderland. Why are these elite athleeches showered with money and privileges while children go without sleds and mittens. It's not right.

Sochi is like 9 hours ahead of us, so prime time for events there is going to be like 3am to noon our time. So most of those hours will actually be taking up time slots normally reserved for strange kids shows and Steven and Chris.

I don't watch the Olympics and won't watch these ones either. Actually I don't watch sports at all you are very mistaken on the Canadian athletes being leeches.

The Harper Cons have taken care of slashing funding to them.........

On July 7th, 2013 I realized a lifelong goal and became a Canadian national judo champion.

After last years nationals where I placed 3rd in -52 U20 I became a senior athlete and didn't really expect to have any outstanding results in this new age division. As fate would have it the international judo federation changed the age category from U20 to U21 and I had one more shot at winning a junior title. I had been fighting -52 the entire year and decided that I had a better chance of winning nationals in -48. After a long and difficult weight cut it turned out to be the right choice for me as I went 4-0 in the tournament to claim the gold and my spot on the team.

Your contribution to my campaign, however big or small, would mean the world to me as it will bring me one step closer to realizing my ultimate goal of representing canada on a world stage.

What contributors RECEIVE:

The cost of travelling to the world championships in Slovenia is approximately $3000 ($1500-2000 for airfare, $1000 for hotels and $120 for insurance and the tournament fee.) I am asking for $1500 to cover half of these expenses.

Maybe you didn't get the memo.... Canada is being affected by the recession that is being globally experienced right now. At this time, we have many that are homeless, seniors that can't afford to live, infrastructure issues and a raft of other more important issues facing all Canadians.

Funding athletics for a handful of (albeit, highly talented) individuals is not at the top of the priority list. I suggest that if this circumstance leads you to many sleepless nights, perhaps you should donate, generously, to the cause and allow the Feds to worry about running the country

I have great respect for physically active people who can turn sweat into homes or crops or other useful goods and services and just about none for medal chasing brats who waste their labour and lives beating clocks.

This is obviously a philosophical issue, so there is no firm answer. I believe that it is important for a country to have a focus both on ensuring these basic needs are provided for, but to also help to provide for things that enrich our lives and make us proud to be Canadian.

Whether we are talking about arts, educational, or athletic institutions, we can't just fund them when it is convenient. There are always going to be market cycles, and so much of the investments made in good times will go to waste if funding disappears every time things are a tight.

It takes long term, consistent investment to build and maintain high quality institutions. You need to invest in the people involved and keep them around long enough to actually reap the benefits of that investment.

Ho, it's purely an economic issue.

Let he masses starve and attempt existence outdoors in -25 or engage a 10 year per athlete program to win some shiny pieces of metal at a competition.

East Germany (a Democratic Republic if I recall correctly) always had impressive results at the Olympics... I wonder why they don't exist today

Lol. You honestly think that East Germany is a good comparison? And that their athletic programs were the reason for their downfall?

Bbbbbut, didn't all of those Oylmpic gold medals 'enrich' the lives of the average East German? They'd forget all about the cold, destitution and poverty and be brimming with national pride and glory

And that their athletic programs were the reason for their downfall?

That is a philosophical issue

CBCs coverage this morning was all about LBGT discrimination and poor lodgings available. I think there is likely several hundred CBC employees and hangerson living it up on the publics coin at the big party. Just listening to the globalist rot coming out of them made me want to get militant, I got so angry I had to knap.
