HAMILTON - A nine-year-old boy is dead after what police are calling a “tragic accident” in a metal fabrication shop.

The boy, whose name has not been released by Hamilton Police, was killed after a large piece of metal fell on him at the shop — located at 65 Imperial Dr. in Hamilton — around 1:45 p.m. Sunday.

Officers remained on the scene Monday.

The boy was at the shop with a “family member” who was permitted to be on the premises, Const. Debbie McGreal-Dinning said.

“It’s a tragic accident and a nine-year-old boy has lost his life,” she said.

McGreal-Dinning said police have yet to determine what caused the incident but will continue to hold the scene pending the results of a post-mortem exam. The business, which police also would not name, was closed Monday.

All of the first responders at the accident site were offered counselling, McGreal-Dinning said.

“Anytime there is a loss of life, especially a child, it’s very traumatic for first responders going to the scene,” she said. “We’re all human. A lot of us are parents. It’s anyone’s worst nightmare.”

Neighbours near the industrial area were shocked about the boy’s death. Jeff Mitchell, who lives across the street, said it’s not unusual to see the occasional ambulance called to the area, but to see a young victim is another thing.

“It’s so sad,” Mitchell said. “And so close to Christmas, too. There is a grieving family out there.”

Veronica Levan was outside her home shovelling snow when a number of police cars and an ambulance came roaring onto Imperial Drive.

“We live so close to the hospital you get used to hearing the sirens,” she said. “But to have this happen, and to a boy, it’s awful.”

Police say the boy was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Ministry of Labour was notified of the accident but Hamilton Police continue to lead the investigation, ministry spokesman Matt Blajer confirmed.

a 9 year old shouldn't be in a factory, although anyone could have gotten hit with the falling metal. :(

Generally speaking, it's not worth the headache to take our kids into hubby's workspace, and they don't even do overhead work very often.

In order to enter the premises, the kids would have to have steel toed shoes or boots on, they'd have to sign a 'safety orientation' (basically an understanding of where they are safe to walk and stand), and they would need to borrow the visitor hard hats. And that's for a shop environment where the biggest day to day risk is that they get smacked with a pipe wrench. If and when any pressure testing (which carries an 'explosion' risk) were occurring, they would be sent back out to the safe zone.

If a shop were to have such lax safety protocols that a 9 year old is there when there is overhead work happening, I can't even fathom the day to day risk that the people who work there are in.

Granted, it could be a lapse, but, in my experience, safety lapses happen when the workplace has gotten complacent.
