McGuinty stepping down with 'idealism intact'

TORONTO — Dalton McGuinty says he’s leaving politics with his “idealism intact.”
The former Ontario premier and MPP for Ottawa South has issued a statement announcing he’ll officially resign Wednesday.
“The end of this session marks an opportune time for me to bring to a close my service to the people of Ottawa South as their member of Parliament,” McGuinty said. “It has been my greatest honour and privilege to follow in my father’s footsteps and to serve Ottawa South families as their representative for nearly 23 years.”
McGuinty’s father, Dalton Sr., held the riding until his death in 1990 when his son, Dalton Jr., won the nomination.
The Ottawa South riding association will hold a nomination meeting on June 20 to pick its next Liberal candidate for the upcoming byelection or election, the statement says. “I wish to thank my Queen’s Park family, my home away from home for over two decades,” McGuinty said. “Members of that family include my caucus colleagues, my colleagues in opposition, the men and women of the Ontario public service, staff and support workers on whose shoulders we all stand and the Queen’s Park press gallery.”
“I will miss your friendship,” he said.
McGuinty went on to thank his family, especially his wife, Terri, and their four children for their unfailing love and support.
“They have endured the ups and downs of my political life with a quiet nobility and for that I am eternally grateful,” he said. “I leave politics with my idealism intact and a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have served in public life.”
Premier Kathleen Wynn tweeted her well wishes on Wednesday morning. "I hope Dalton, Terri and their children enjoy the next phase of their lives together. Thank you #24," she tweeted in reference to McGuinty being the 24th premier of Ontario.
