Eatery fined for ‘cruel’ display of lobsters on ice
No word on whether cooking and eating them is considered humane

ROME - An Italian restaurant was fined 688 euros ($855) for displaying live lobsters on ice to attract patrons, in an innovative application of an anti-cruelty law usually affecting household pets.

A court in the northeastern city of Vicenza ruled the display was a form of abuse dooming the crustaceans to a slow death by suffocation.

"We're appealing," said Giuseppe Scalesia, who runs La Conchiglia D'Oro, or "Golden Shell," restaurant along with his brother Camillo.

They said that the lobsters, lying on the ice, suffer.... They compared them in court to other animals, like cats and dogs."

The case was brought by Gianpaolo Cecchetto, a former environmental activist, who took his two young children to the Vicenza restaurant in May 2002.

"They were shocked by the display," Cecchetto told Reuters, adding he immediately got in touch with the the ENPA national animal protection entity. "ENPA took care of the lawyers and legal proceedings."

Italy has some of the world's toughest animal rights laws. The city of Rome in October banned goldfish bowls, seen as cruel, while Turin passed a law last year that would fine dog owners 500 euros unless they walked their canine friends at least three times a day.

That's outrageous ITN. I am glad you brought this to our attention. Lobsters should of course be kindly treated by keeping them at room temperature or higher. Otherwise the shock of the temperature change from ice cold to boiling hot water would surely kill them!!!!

I don't want the lobsters to suffocate to death while diners eat. I like them swimming in tanks with their claws bound, much more humane.

Lobsters have a diminished central nervous system and don't feel pain.

And I've always regarded them one step above a potato.

They're great with butter. :D

I anaesthetize mine with ether first, all the time playing quiet classical music in the background, so that they have no idea what is about to happen....

lol Very funny JIm. I bought a couple of ten pound lobsters last summer and when I put them in the pot they kept knocking the lid off, I beat them back into the pot with a wooden spoon. The dog got into the brawl and he was standing on his hind legs trying to get the lobsters out of the pot. It was utter mayham. Finally my brother-in-law put a brick on the lid, those poor lobster went down fighting. With a little lemon and melted butter they were yummy.

I like taking the rubber bands off of the claws and letting them play on the kitchen floor with the cat....

Nuking a Lobster? I would think the meat would explode inside the shell? I guess not if you liked it, unless you wanted a pulp for a dip?

I like slowly sliding them tail first into the pot so I can look them dead in the eye when committing the bastardly deed!

An abnormal number of Canadians have always struck me as extremely cruel, savage, barbaric and criminal people. Judging from these comments how they salivate over pain and blood, and the fact they haven't lifted a finger to stop the largest and most cruel wildlife slaughter in the world for decades, the yearly bloodbath of hundreds of thousands of arctic baby seals. It takes a global effort to isolate Canada and stop them. I don't know any country in the world more savage than Canada.

Not that a Canadian would have a tiny iota of conscience about inflicting suffering on any animal or human, as evidenced by their tendency to savage cruelty, but lobsters do feel pain, as confirmed by numerous studies. It doesn't matter how primitive their brains are they have the same nerve endings as humans and would feel the same agony as if you and your family were dropped in boiling water.

Ohh... yer one of them are ya?

I bet you and your family wouldn't taste nearly as good as a lobster, all those lead pain chips you ate as child kinda ruins your taste.

Welcome to "Canadian Content Forums" Mark! There are a couple of Threads (I
believe in the NEWS section) on the Seal Hunt if you're interested. Canadians
arguing both for and against it. They're a lot more current than the Three
year old Thread on "Lobster Cruelty" where many of those members are no longer
active on the Forum.
