Nothing. The kids can partake or not, they have a choice.

Yeah all one has to do is stand for a minute or two and then sit back down..... I don't remember anybody ever being forced to sing.... so I don't see a problem. If you have assignments, tests, projects, classes and teachers thrown at you with little choice, why should there be a choice in standing or not standing for a couple of minutes.

It's a little bit of exercise if nothing else.....

lol... The only time I ever sung the Canadian national anthem in school was when I went to English school for the first half of elementary school.

I then switched to French school and never heard it again... I hope y'all realize that the anthem is not sung in virtually all francophone schools in Quebec... Why don't the Conservatives get angry about that?

They want to win seats in Quebec?

I doubt that. Did anybody even ask the kids if they cared one way or another. No...they are being told that they will be patriotic whether they like it or not.

They can also go to homeschooling or private schooling.

If they don't want to be patriotic, maybe they shouldn't go to state funded schools?

You can doubt all you want. All it does is make you look stupid. I know the school, I know the way it works, there, and in the schools here.
As i said, you can doubt all you want. Do you know what the regulations are in other parts of the country?
In Ontario, regulations require the anthem be read, performed or played either in the morning or the evening in each school, and children who object are allowed to leave the room.

Thank you. I appreciate that.

It's interesting you pointed out that they can leave the room in Ontario but didn't (or wouldn't) explain what would happen in this school. It would appear my doubts have been confirmed.

Let's not confuse patriotism with nationalism. One is merely love for one's country, the other a belief in the moral superiority of one country other another.

I've been invited to religious ceremonies of religions other than my own before, and while others prayed, I simply sat silent. In my opinion, silence does not necessarily mean approval, but just silence and respect for the other.

If we can handle it with such touchy issues such as religion, I'm sure we can handle it with the national anthem. If you don't a gree with certain verses of the lyrics, then just stay silent. Is it really that big a deal?

No, let's. It is easily done, as history shows.

Nationalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I disagree with your first point (i.e. 'let's'), but I do agree with your second (i.e. that they have often been confused).

The reason I disagree with the first one is that I believe that the promotion of a healthy patriotism is the best defence against nationalism, and here's why:

If a person knows the difference between the two, he's less likely to confuse them and fall into the clutches of nationalism. Also, if a society is patriotic, people won't feel a need for nationalism or other fanatical ideologies. It's like the basic rule that for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction. Lack of patriotism can also feed nationalism as a blind, irrational and fearful reaction to this lack of patriotism. And of course the same holds true in reverse: nationalism can make peopel embarrassed of showing their patriotism out of fear of being associated with nationalists.

To some degree that has happened to me. I find certain verses of the national anthem to be excessively nationalistic, and that turns me away from the anthem to some degree. However, apathy is equally harmful in that it leads people to not care for their fellowmen. I do belive though that schools do need to teach a healthy sense of patriotism, a love for our country, which could be tought in conjunction with a recognition that the earth is essentially one country, not necessarily in a political sense, but as a feeling of universal brotherhood.

No, sorry, the only thing confirmed is your inability to think.
