Trent Reznor of Ninch Inch Nails has experimented with ideas like that. With his latest album, he offered a free mp3 version from his website but also gave you the option to buy the album with associated artwork, additional songs, videos etc. From what I have read he did quite well, financially with this.
Within reason I would hope, no sense him making 98,000% and still charging the whole $50. When I saw your name in the reply by box I thought you were going to ask how much extra the "X-RATED" version would be. LOL I'll try to remember you don't think along that line all-the-time.

This problem has been around for a long time...probably since the emergence of the compact cassette tape...

Anyone remember feeling guilty dubbing that copy of Breakfast in America?

Yes the problem is exponentially worse now, but in principle the concept is the same...

The only reason he is able to do this is because he dumped his label, allowing him to control the whole process. Creation-Publishing-Sales. You remove the label out of the equation and it gives the artists all the more leeway to give the consumer what they want.

Similar, yes. The internet has just made it easier to distribute. Part of the problem lays with the studios/publishers failing to adopt technology and relying on business models which were valid for the previous 40 years yet antiquated now.

Currently, downloading movies or music, in Canada is perfectly legal, for the time being. The Harper Gov't working on a law to make it illegal. What chaps my ass, though, is the law, which in effect is re-writing the copyright act, will eliminate the fair use clause, which allows someone to make a copy,(backup) of music or a movie for their own personal use, so the original doesn't get wrecked. Also, under the new law, pertaining to music, even if you own the cd, or a collection of them, it would be an offense (technically) to put that music to an mp3 player, and mix and match it for your enjoyment. GIVE ME A BREAK. Besides, when we buy blank media, we are FORCED to pay a royalty fee (tax), where that money goes, isn't my problem, I've paid it. As far as I'm concerned, paying that fee (tax) gives me a license to download.

Pertaining to movies, Hollywood is complaining about downloaders, yet they have the audacity to brag about how much money the make. If they are going to complain about pirating, they REALLY need to look in house FIRST. I know of two recent movies that are dvd quallty, leaked. One of their OWN people is leaking dvd copy of a movie to the net, which is, as far as I'm concerned, public domain. All downloaders are doing is grabbing it. If it wasn't available in the first place, it couldn't be downloaded.

If you like the work in question, than logically you want to support it. The easiest way to do that is to buy it.

But then you take a look at the legitimate copy you just purchased and you compare it to what you could have if you pirated it, and you realize that with the DRM locks on your copy, you now have the inferior product. They took a big dump on you for supporting their work in order to make it a tiny bit harder for someone who wouldn't buy it in the first place to get it for free.

If you want the superior product, pirate it. If you want to support the artists even though they seem to have no respect for their customers, buy it, and put the unopened box on a shelf.
