CTV News | Ontario takes Asian carp fight to U.S. Supreme Court

Im sure there are people who couldnt care less, but the avid anglers like me this is something to care about

Quote:

Ontario has filed a motion in the U.S. Supreme court, supporting a lawsuit aimed at preventing the spread of an invasive fish into the Great Lakes that could cause billions of dollars in damage to the fishing industry.
Ontario Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield told CTV.ca the motion was filed Thursday morning by the province's Attorney General.
Ontario -- the only Canadian province that borders the Great Lakes -- joins U.S. states Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin in support of a lawsuit launched by Michigan earlier this month, demanding the state of Illinois shut down shipping locks in Chicago to prevent the Asian carp from spreading into Lake Michigan.
Aquatic biologists warn that once the fish gets into Lake Michigan, it will spread uncontrollably into the other Great Lakes, and eat so much, it will starve off native species. DNA evidence has shown the fish are 10 kilometres from the mouth of Lake Michigan, close to a barrier intended to block them from infiltrating the lake.
Michigan claims the Asian carp would cause $7 billion in damage to the Great Lakes' fishing industries. Ontario would be hit especially hard because it borders four out of the five lake

The carp are better stronger fish, it's the law of nature, a tackle change is what you need. Don't expect our taxes to subsidize your torturing worms by protecting obsolete fish that can't make the cut.

Great Lakes are so messed up with invasive species only a complete flush would ever set things right ... and then a scrub to get rid of the damned zebra mussels....

The solution is to eat them. Turn them into fish sticks or fillet-o-fish, or something like that. I mean those value added products taste like crap anyways. Who would notice? Heck, McDonalds could even call the Fillet-o-fish an ecologically responsible product, or some other BS branding.

Gill nets, electro-fish, anglers, dip-net, whatever. Just catch them. I told this to Bear once before too; there's a product used to induce spawning in captive fish species that fail to mature sexually in domestic environments. It's called Carp pituitary extract. -- than cocaine.

I've never eaten a fillet-o-fish. That's sacrilege in SW Nova Scotia. An indictable offense on your character and reputation!

I know you're right. Depends on what restaurant you go into. Great hook for the suckers, eh?

Nice little place near Bathurst and Egligton. The way lox was presented on the menu read like manna from heaven. What came looked a lot like the mashed potatoes ... and tasted like spiced mud: carp!

I only know a few people that eat suckers,I've been ice fishing where people just toss them on top of the ice and the damn things will be kicking 3 hours later.
One tough fish and we have them here at the headwaters on the continental divide.
I dont know how they got here but its hard to believe they swam all the way here as they dont do good in fast water.
That is if your talking about the carp like suckers and not grayling or whitefish as they also resemble a sucker but are good smoked.

I ate carp once and your description of what it tasted like is perfect. "spiced mud".

A potentially 60lb freshwater fish that can eat 30lbs a day...and they
can go airborn to avoid obstacles and predators...and they like cold
water.

it is bad they are massive eating machines, and on top of that they destroy the bottam and uproot plants to find food. This may not sound bad to most people, but since the zebra mussels cleaned out the water to make it sparkling clear most of the food is at the bottam. This will equal out to a big **** storm

With their growth rate...it's a shame they're not good eating. Perhaps
they can be commercially harvested for pet food or fertilizer or
something along those lines. The answer might lay in making
it profitable to clean up (or clean out) this mess....

I mean profitable for non-Government so that it'll actually happen.

Well the sea lampreys will get them, but then there numbers will explode and ruin any chance at harvesting them in mass. Kinda similar to the lake trout....

Can this Carp Pituitary Extract be used on other species of fish other
than Carp? If it can only be used on Carp, for captive breeding programs,
and these Asian Carp where formerly captive critters until they got away,
isn't the idea self defeating and just setting ourselves up for another
escape? Can the Asian Carp Pituitary Extract be used on other Carp
species, if not other completely different fish?

You can use it on carp, catfish, salmon, trout, bass, muskellunge...and many other species. It's more effective in some species than others. That's just due to slight differences in the hormones stimulating the pituitary gland.

Cool....well, Pitter-Patter.....or is there a reason this isn't already being implemented
on a mass scale already? Is the market there to do this on a mass scale and clean
out the Asian Carp from North American waters for this Extract?
