Vice-President, shilling troupe of retired generals, deliver fantastic tales for their cause

By ERIC MARGOLIS

PARIS -- U.S. intelligence released a dramatic video last Thursday, supposedly taken by an Israeli spy, that purportedly showed North Korean technicians helping build a nuclear reactor in Syria.
The reactor was destroyed seven months ago by Israeli warplanes.
Until now Israel and the U.S. have remained silent about the attack. Syria claimed a warehouse was hit, but curiously said nothing more about what was an act of war. Washington offered no proof the reactor, if it was one, would have produced weapons rather than electric power. U.S. and Israeli intelligence have long stated Syria had no nuclear weapons capabilities.
Vice-President Dick Cheney and fellow neocons forced the CIA to release the James Bondish video in an effort to sabotage an impending six-nation agreement to end North Korea's nuclear program. They bitterly oppose the deal for being too soft on Pyongyang. Neocons long have worried the possibility of North Korea selling nuclear technology to Arab states posed a potential threat to Israel.
This mysterious imbroglio also is being used by Israel's rightwing Likud Party, a close ally of U.S. neocons, to attack political rival Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his Kadima Party.

BACK-CHANNEL TALKS

Olmert has been involved in Turkish-brokered, back-channel peace talks with Syria for years. Likud and its U.S. allies are determined to sabotage any deal with Damascus that would return the Golan Heights, which Israel conquered in the 1967 war, to Syria. The Likudniks also sought to derail efforts by former U.S. president Jimmy Carter to encourage the Israeli-Syrian talks, and get Israel and the militant Palestinian movement, Hamas, to talk.
Under the purported deal, Israel would return the Golan Heights in exchange for Damascus' agreement to sever its close links with Iran, Lebanon's Hezbollah, and Hamas. Syria also would grant Israel important water rights. The fate of up to 250,000 Syrian inhabitants driven from Golan remains uncertain.
Israel, backed by the Bush administration, certainly has been using the carrot of a return of Golan to entice Syria away from Iran. But there is also a big stick: Ever-stronger threats of a U.S.-Israeli attack on Syria. Israel's September attack on Syria was a clear warning.
Cheney and fellow militarists are pushing hard for attacks on Syria, Lebanon and Iran before President George W. Bush leaves office. Neocons have flocked to Sen. John McCain's banner -- in spite of Hillary Clinton's vow to "obliterate" Iran if it attacked Israel with nuclear weapons. They believe U.S. attacks on Arab states and/or Iran would prove decisive in winning the presidency for McCain this November. A U.S. attack on Syria could well be the first step of a broader air war against Lebanon and Iran.

SYRIAN REACTOR

Meanwhile, Cheney and allies in Congress and the media are also using the Syrian reactor hubbub to undermine efforts by the U.S. state department, a primary hate object for neocons, to implement the nuclear weapons freeze with North Korea. State department boss Condoleezza Rice has run for cover, leaving her chief negotiator with North Korea to twist in the wind.
As the latest furor builds over the nefarious North Korean, we should remember that this scare story comes from the same Washington fib factory that manufactured all the alarms and "evidence" about Saddam Hussein's non-existent weapons of mass destruction and links to al-Qaida.
North Koreans are pretty scary, but their nuclear capabilities and the threat they supposedly pose have been exaggerated. South Korea and European intelligence agencies, for example, are cautious about Washington's claims about North Korea and Syria.
The New York Times revealed last week what this column has long said: The Pentagon has duped Americans and Canadians by organizing a bunch of retired U.S. generals -- mislabelled "independent military experts" -- to shill for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Watch these rent-a-generals again prostitute themselves on TV by promoting the administration's party line about the great Syrian nuclear menace.

Ah.....I think this would clearly indicate that the USA and Israel were perfectly correct on all counts......what the target was, what it was being used for, and the action necessary to end it.......

Seriously?

1.) Its an act of war against Syria..BECAUSE SYRIA IS AT WAR WITH ISRAEL. Syria declared war on Israel and has never ended hostilities.

Israel and Syria are within their rights to carpet bomb each other.

2.) Oh come on, this is a stretch?

That Syria, a nation at war with a nuclear nation, is trying to build its own nukes?

If Syria is not trying to build its own nukes then they are incompetant when it comes to running a war, something they have proven many times they are not.

And seriously, why would Israel bomb "a warehouse" that contains nothing. I know its a shocker to people who like to believe Syria with its history of torture and oppression might not be a peacemongering hippy who believes you can't hug your children with nuclear arms...

But most countries in the world have no beef with nuclear weapons, unless they are the ones already with them and their neighbour doesn't.

In the same way no one cares about gun control except to take guns away from others they consider lunatics.

Seriously, Syria was trying to go nuclear and will again. Every dictatorship worth its salt and every democracy not under an existing nuclear umbrella, inevitabley goes nuclear or at least tries to.

What is an existing nucular newclear/nukalure atomic umbrella?
When my country gets these nuclear weapons I'll feel safer knowing America and Israelia and Briton/ France cannot phuck with us like they do now. Harpers mad scientist are only months aways from completeing the Atomic Horse**** Missile that's what the bad smell is in Ohtahaha. It is a guided crap detecting weapon, you should get behind your crap shield right now.

I'm sorry I was so intent in ****ting on Zzarchov that I almost forgot to comment on the retarded Generals, it should be perfectly clear that those individuals whom we have trusted with high military posts are and have been useless lying bags of **** who spew untruths out of thier filthy gaping pie holes for anybody who will pay them to do so. Just the same as the filthy lying politicians who they work for and the filthy lying clergy who bless thier twisted works and words everytime a crow ****s in the forest. Why should anyone but those blessed with the lowest intellect be the least bit surprized by rumours of misdeeds and forked tongues from among the minions of the filthy rich elite banking lizards.

Imad Moustapha, Syria's envoy to the USA, gave a news conference that was shown on C-Span last week in which he said it was the equivalent of an act of war. Perhaps the reporter's article was made before the conference had been conducted.

UnclePercy

Late to the game are you?

Why do you Americans not call a school for terrorism what it is? Why do you Americans insist on U.N. sanctions then flip around to taking action unilaterally? Why is Syria or Iran or anyone else supplying arms to Iraq or whomever the U.S. doesn't like....terrorist support but the U.S. armed the Afghanis to repel the Russians and supplied arms to the Contras and supplied arms to Suharto and Pinochet and the list goes on and on...and yet you Unclepercy believe that the United States that spends more money on arms and military development than any other nation on earth...who maintain military bases all over the planet and have called repeatedly for "missile defense shields" in Europe but nearly took the world to war when Russia put missiles in Cuba....and as far back as that event was looking at developing space-based weapons.....and who most recently invaded a nation where despite lying about Al Qeada being a friend of Saddam Hussein and lying about Iraq sitting on piles of WMD....how much proof of arrogance and hypocrisy do you need?

Oh wait....

You're a supporter of the American Big Stick policy and Manifest Destiny and all that rhetroric that so strongly suggests "peace"....right?

What a laugh! Tell me where the anthrax came from that was dispersed around the same time as the WTC atrocity....well gosh...from an American Army weapons lab...how many nukes have you lost again....I could go on you know the list of outrageous militaristic activity by the United States fills volumes.

You don't want to believe your nation is a threat to world peace despite the fact that the world recognizes the corruption and lies of the United States for exactly that.

Not actually. I think the USA has gone completely evil and is trying to take over the world. Why do I think that? BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY TELL US! All your leaders talk about is spreading US democracy (corporatism and corruption), starting new wars, that the Iraqis are being lazy and not helping the US out enough (the arrogance is mind boggling), being the world police (bully) force, crippling the UN, and securing energy and hegemony for itself in the world!

Um yeah... the USA is definitely the biggest threat to world peace!

The problem is, Israel has every right to nukes and I'd like to see you take them away.

Even if you do, sooner or later everyone is still going to get nukes. There is no reason for them not to want an effective military, they are military dictatorships.

Sooner or later everyone will have nuclear weapons, its the next stage in military technology, you may as well try and ban aircraft. All you can do is slow down the spread and hopefully use the time before the apocolypse to make preparations and defenses.

The warehouse that needs to be bombed into oblivion is the Pentagon. A warehouse of bought and paid for sychophants to the defense industry.

Once again we're discussing the substance, the "object" of the matter and not the principle involved. Nuclear weapons are like guns....they can't perform their function by themselves! It's time to consider (well actually long past time) why Syria or Korea or anyone else lusts after the nuclear bomb. Might it be because the example of America's speedy use of it in killing hundreds of thousands of Japanese? Might it be the examples set by Russia and France and all the nuclear bullies who have established the "standard" of terror by which they've all come to wield the end of future-man by the facility of colliding atomic particles?

Of course it is!

Israel has nuclear capability because it's a "deterent"...right...what a laugh. The United States has nuclear weapons all over the planet becasue they need them for "defense"...another laugh.

The nuclear bullies of the world have only themselves to thank for creating this mess and until the psychology of self-destruction...that will ultimately accompany consumption without regard for consequence...and religious fanaticism ...are dealt with...it will remain the rule of the bully with the bomb.

Go for it, arm if you wish to and just prepare for a fight. This isn't happy camp land, if they want to send the image they are preparing for a fight then they can have a fight, but it sure as hell won't be on their terms.

But it is rather pointless to have a military at all without nuclear weapons in many respects.

The thing is, Iran and Syria could not get away with half the crap they do if they were a nuclear power.

For instance, if Syria was nuclear, it couldn't just sit in a state of war with Israel for 40 years. One way or another the war would end quickly and millions would be dead. Similar to Iran's calls for Israels destruction,

Ever notice there was no blatant calls for the immediate destruction of the USSR/USA by the opposing side during the cold war?

Little would amuse me more that watching Israel launch a nuclear strike against Syria and while toasting their victory watch as a radioactive cloud of dust settled over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv....

What a hoot!
