The White House said earlier that Mr Bush would carry out the veto behind closed doors, and without any press or television in attendance. The State Children's Health Insurance Program is a joint state-federal effort that subsidises health coverage for 6.6m, mostly children from families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford their own private coverage.

It's too bad they couldn't get the support in Congress. 4 million children denied access to a program that already exists, for shame Mr. Bush....

Well...ya know....ensuring the good health of future generations just puts ya on that horrible road to "socialized medicine"..... can't have that now.

Bush argued the plan would be a move towards "socialised medicine"

It's worse than that. They're already on that path, Bush is only saying they've gone far enough.

Too true Ott.Bill. I love America. I hope they come out of this malady with renewed vigor and a positive outlook similar to those surviving horrible illness.

Well, I don't know if that is specifically what he is saying, that's just what his actions say to me;) I agree it is BS.

They will only come out of it if they start doing the right thing... collectively. It's no different up here... when almost half the population stays home at voting time, the country deserves what it gets.

When the constitution gets urinated upon by the highest office in the land and the people do nothing about it, they deserve what they get....

When the gov't of Canada is so corrupt that it steals billions of dollars of our money to give to their buddies and people still almost re-elect them, the country gets what it deserves! Our two countries are ruled by the elite, and yet the people really do have the power to change that.... they just choose not to because House is on.... it's easier to watch TV and turn of your brain than it is to write a letter to your MP.

Well, not to hijack or anything, but I write emails all the time. My last one was during the closing days of public consultation on the Kyoto Implementation Bill, to the Hon. John Baird. I also get daily emails from the PMO.

The problem wasn't that they gave money to their friends, the problem was that the friends were giving the money back to them.

Nepotism is way too common in Canada at all levels. I assure you that Jimmy, the local businessman, makes sure his kids get some good jobs if they want them. Most people in the position to make the decisions think it is perfectly acceptable to treat your friends better than others at the small business level, the medium business level, the high business level and the government level. It is the people disconnected from the decision process that abstract it and view it badly.

Who gets hired to mow lawns? Friends of the family, yet there are people who may do a better job and need the money more. Once one takes that as acceptable, then the local retail manager hires their friends, or friends of friends and it just goes all the way up. Same reasoning at every stage.

How a business or a person spends their own money is entirely a different matter and none of my concern! If they waste their money hiring their idiot brother, that's different than a politician hiring his idiot brother to be his Deputy Minister! Although, it might matter to shareholders if the business is publicly traded....

Gov't nepottism is an entirely different matter since they are using OUR money....

It's the House that didn't muster enough votes to override the veto. The Senate came together.

Shame is putting it mildly. But as Joe Shmoe said, you get what you vote for or what you don't vote for.

My bad, shows my ignorance of your system, I thought the House was both legislative branches, like Senate and Congress being the other...

A bit off topic, apologies to the mods.

The House of Representatives and the Senate comprise the United States Congress, a bicameral legislature. Just FYI.

ITN - that terminology had me buffalo'ed for a long time...

The House of Representatives - is comprised of Congressmen (or Representatives) elected...

The Senate is comprised of Senators elected...

The Legislative Assembly is the 'House of Congress' (huh is this right?)

Ach....I'm glad I don't have to take that test again!

Who gets hired to mow lawns? Friends of the family,

Yeah but it's your lawn, your money, your decision. When you take my money to hire your cousin to build a new lawn just so you can use more of my money to hire your brother-in-law to cut it, then we have a problem. :angryfire:
