Hope you have a good day. Drink and be merry, but don't pee on monuments or burn any flags.

The Heineken is in the fridge, the barbecue is ready to go, and the sun is shining brightly in south Florida this morning.

Took yesterday off to have a four day weekend, hate holidays in the middle of the week. Hope it doesn't rain tonight when we set off our fireworks.

Happy Fourth all!!

I agree, have a good time, but I think after all the arguements you and I have had over this subject, I've found good old wikipaedia has summed it up better than I ever could:

"By 1765 the taxes paid by the American colonists no longer covered the expenses of the garrisons protecting them and therefore the government of the time extended the stamp duty which had been in force on home territory since 1694 to cover the American colonies as well in the Stamp Act 1765. However the colonists despised this as they were not represented in Parliament and refused to see how a body, which did not represent them, could tax them. The cry ‘no taxation without representation’ rang throughout the colonies. The fact that this cry could have equally been applied in the United Kingdom seemed to be lost on them"

I just sometimes get frustrated when I hear "the fat british and their deep pockets full of our taxes" when, as you may know, most of britain was populated by people starving, dying in poorhouses and having no representation at all. Thats the only problem I ever really had with the US, so have a good time and remember to tip them waitresse's!!!! their on awful money and they'll repay you later

Daz, how many times in your travels throughout the US have you ever met an American that has bad feelings towards the British (English)? I was born and raised here, I can honestly tell you, not a single one I have ever met.

The reference you may hear "the fat british and their deep pockets full of our taxes" refers to King George and the rest of the Monarchy, by no means the people.

Now granted, many in the US are not aware of the poverty stricken British Empire (population level), but that's never what the British Empire projected. It was always a cool, thundering organized mighty force. And yet even after 1776 and later 1812, Americans sought good relations with the British Empire.

Here we are :D

RE: Happy Independence Da

very true, very true.....I have never heard an american have a bad word against Britain today, where you intending on celebrating then?....cus I still dont understandy why, when buying booze in a bar over there, and a soft drink is thrown in free of charge, why one would want to tip the bartender for a free drink?....hehehehe or maybe thats because I'm tight with my money :)

There has been some talk of separating south Florida from the rest because it's views are so different. I must say that it does feel very different, more northeast urban than southern.

And it does get very tiring seeing the confederate types having so much power in the state. On the other hand, an english speaking anglo like me would be a visible minority in south Florida :p

Happy Independence Day! :D

Just wanted to say, "Thank you." We do have manners, at least most of us. It was a pleasant, quiet day for us with family. Even got a little rain.
