McCain: Trump’s attacks on press are 'how dictators get started'

President Donald Trump’s attacks on the press echo the language of dictators, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” warning the nation to heed lessons of history.

Attacks on the press, McCain said, are “how dictators get started.”

“I hate the press. I hate you especially," McCain told NBC's Chuck Todd, according to excerpts of the interview set to air Sunday. "But the fact is we need you. We need a free press. We must have it. It's vital. If you want to preserve – I'm very serious now – if you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. And without it, I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That's how dictators get started.”

McCain’s comments came in response to a question about Trump’s recent declaration, made via Twitter, that the press is the “enemy of the American People.”

“They get started by suppressing free press,” McCain said of dictators. “In other words, a consolidation of power when you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press."

No. Media is how they start to gain control.

The use of a pop music station lead to millions butchered in Rwanda.

Why would a media under attack convey the message of a government?

They convey their own message rather than that of Trump's admin.
A fake news media shows a silent coup has already happened. Only certain media are named as fake news, others are still posting the truth so there is more freedom of the press than less.
I though you should know that.

"Still posting the truth" Who decides which "truth" is true.Just because it's the crap you agree with, doesn't make it true. Never heard of "fake news" 'till they started calling trump and conway and others on the obvious bull**** they were spreading. But if you tards want to believe tall tales about "bowling green massacres",fine.

John McCain just systematically dismantled Donald Trump’s entire worldview

John McCain is increasingly mad as hell about President Trump. And on Friday, he went after Trump — hard.

During a speech at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, the Republican senator from Arizona delivered a pointed and striking point-by-point takedown of Trump's worldview and brand of nationalism. McCain didn't mention Trump's name once, but he didn't have to.

And even considering the two men's up-and-down history and the terrible things Trump has said about McCain, it was a striking display from a senior leader of a party when it comes to a president of the same party.

In his speech, McCain suggested the Western world is uniquely imperiled this year — even more so than when Barack Obama was president — and proceeded to question whether it will even survive.

“In recent years, this question would invite accusations of hyperbole and alarmism; not this year,” McCain said. “If ever there were a time to treat this question with a deadly seriousness, it is now.”

In case there was any doubt that this was about Trump. Here's what followed:

"[The founders of the Munich conference] would be alarmed by an increasing turn away from universal values and toward old ties of blood and race and sectarianism.”
“They would be alarmed by the hardening resentment we see towards immigrants and refugees and minority groups -- especially Muslims.”
“They would be alarmed by the growing inability -- and even unwillingness -- to separate truth from lies.”
"They would be alarmed that more and more of our fellow citizens seem to be flirting with authoritarianism and romanticizing it as our moral equivalent."
That's Trump, Trump, Trump and Trump.

Trump represents authoritarian dictatorship.

And the utter failure of his pathetic Muslim ban proves that doesn't work in today's democracy.

We have the opposite problem here in Canada. Our national broadcaster, the CBC...funded by the government...is in bed with the ruling Liberals.

Nonsense.

If you listen to Power and Politics, CBC blasts the government quite regularly.

It's the one thing the mainstream media does correctly.

CBC ony ever blasted Harper. And mostly on things he was right about. So far trudOWE has basically gotten a free pass from the lefty media. The one thing he did right was approve the pipelines and your favorite house organ blasted him for that.
So what is your score now? 0 for 30000?

Nope.

They blasted Trudeau on his latest trip and cancelling electoral reform.

You are just uninformed.

Even This Hour Has 20 Minutes won't lay a glove on their beloved Juthtin after openly mocking Harper for years.
