1984 sales soar after Trump claims, alternative facts

After incorrect or unprovable statements made by U.S. Republican President Donald Trump and some White House aides, one truth is undeniable: Sales of George Orwell's 1984 are soaring.

First published in 1949, Orwell's classic dystopian tale of a society in which facts are distorted and suppressed in a cloud of "newspeak" topped the bestseller list of Amazon.com as of Tuesday evening and the publisher has ordered an additional 75,000 copies.

Signet Classics told The Associated Press in a statement Wednesday that sales have been "remarkably robust" for a book that already is a classroom standard. The publisher noted that books such as Orwell's tap into "the fears, anxieties, and even hopes" of readers.

The sales bump comes after the Trump administration's assertions his inauguration had record attendance and his unfounded allegation that millions of illegal votes were cast against him last fall.

Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway coined an instant catchphrase Sunday when she called his claims about crowd size "alternative facts," bringing comparisons on social media to 1984.

Black is White. Up is down. Wrong is Right. Truth is fake.

Facts and alternate facts.

We're at war with Eastasia. We've always been at war with Eastasia. We've always been at peace with Eurasia.

Alternative facts are now a fact of life. All it means is that all 'facts' are open to interpretation and that's what people do nowadays. If they don't like what they hear, they simply say it's not what they heard or it's a lie or it has a different meaning or whatever allows them to stick their heads in the sand.

Socialists like Obama and the Democrats are the Orwellians, curtailing free speech and telling us what to think, what is socially acceptable, etc.
When Trump puts a stop to all that BS people will once again be able to express themselves freely.

"Amazon Kindle users surprised by 'Big Brother' move

Owners of Amazon's Kindle electronic book reader have received a nasty surprise, after discovering that copies of books by George Orwell had been deleted from their gadgets without their knowledge.

The books - downloaded from Amazon.com by American Kindle users - were remotely deleted after what the US company now says was a rights issue regarding the publisher, MobileReference.com."

While I do not subscribe to alternate facts, there are several opinions and beliefs that get presented these days as facts. Calling somebody's facts into question is legitimate. I can see our old Canadian PM from Shawinigan saying something like "a fact is not a fact unless it is factual" or something like that.

In the novel 1984, didn't the government make you start your day by doing exercises?

I can just imagine Canadians in the future doing the same under our poofy Prime Minister...

Of course facts are facts.
What I disagree with is the presentation of events as fact when they are not proven to be factual. Or when there is proof some people
still choose not to believe it because it's not what they want to hear.
It is plain that the media doesn't always check the truth of what they report and that they twist, add or delete words from statements that detract from the truth.
Fact is, it's almost impossible any more to know what is fact and what it not.

There's no depth, analysis, patience, subtlety or nuance to News anymore.

Just 'buzzy headlines' to grab the attention of the millennial gnats.
