Gingrich: Trump backing away from 'drain the swamp'

President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on a promised to “drain the swamp” in Washington of corruption, but now that he’s preparing to move into the White House, Newt Gingrich said the Manhattan billionaire is looking to distance himself from that message.

“I'm told he now just disclaims that. He now says it was cute, but he doesn't want to use it anymore,” the former House Speaker and close Trump adviser said of the “drain the swamp” message in an NPR interview published Wednesday morning. “I've noticed on a couple of fronts, like people chanting ‘lock her up,’ that he's in a different role now and maybe he feels that as president, as the next president of the United States, that he should be marginally more dignified than talking about alligators in swamps.”

Speaking of Mexican Fireworks, I'm waiting for Ann Coulter's head to explode when Trump doesn't spend the first 100 days building a wall on the border.

We'll see where this goes. He's appointed a highly conservative.. and rich.. Cabinet. The real character of his administration has yet to reveal itself. If he is a true economic nationalist, populist and social conservative that will become evident in the first year. He has many contradictory views represented within his inner circle.

The 'Gucci Gulch' corporate lobbying, who's primary goal is unfettered global free market capitalism, regressive taxation, deregulation, privatization has ruled Washington since the 1970s. Trump will have to stamp his authority on his presidency over their influence.. or it will be just more of the same.

I am quite ready to be disillusioned and betrayed by Trump's rhetoric, and call it such.. but its too early to conclude that. He hasn't even been inaugurated yet. I have trouble believing that some form of real change from the disastrous and amoral cultural and economic policies of the last 5 decades is not inevitable.

Gingrich said in a video he posted on Twitter: "I want to report I made a big boo-boo. I talked this morning with President-elect Trump, and he reminded me he likes 'draining the swamp.'"

He added: "When I make a mistake, I'm going to be straightforward and tell you. I blew that one. 'Draining the swamp' is in. President-elect Trump wants to do it. And you're going to get to be a part of it."

The open apology was immediately mocked by former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin, who shared a link to Gingrich's apology, and wrote: "Newt is learning the public prostration required of authoritarian loyalists. The dear leader often changes his mind but he's always correct."
