Delays on Keystone XL hurting many Americans

It has become clear politics is the only thing preventing President Barack Obama from deciding whether to approve the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. That ought to infuriate thousands of construction workers who could be working on the project as early as this summer, not to mention millions of Americans who could be paying less for fuel if the pipeline is built.

A few months ago, the State Department revealed that, after years of study, it could find no reason to prohibit the pipeline, which is intended to bring oil from Canada to the U.S. That seemed to be the last thing in the way of a decision by Obama.

But five years of delaying a decision, even after study after study found no environmental concern serious enough to reject the pipeline, seem to have emboldened the president. If the public would tolerate that much delay, why not a few more months - until after the elections in November?

So, last week, the State Department announced another delay in the review process. Holding off on a decision until after November will mean the entire 2014 construction season will be missed.

It is a measure of the friendship between our two nations that Canadian officials have not already decided to forget about Keystone XL and sell their oil to China. That is a very real prospect.

If that happens, it at least will get Obama off the hook. He will not have to risk the political fallout of a decision, one way or the other. And that, it seems, is his primary concern.

In the long run, it will harm more people and other life forms than it will benefit. The same goes for the Northern Gateway. Greed and ignorance will be the death of us all.

Good thing we have fossils fuel to feed the masses so they can sit on their asses all day complaining about oil.

No doubt... Funny how the usual suspects get quiet as a mouse the moment you request an opinion on how much wood it would take for Canadians to heat their homes in the winter.

Clear-cuts; here we come!

Even then you'll get moonbeams taking dead trees stealing the food of the baby trees and proclaiming they've done no wrong.

Anyone heard on how the moonbeams intend to heat their multi story hives with no fossil fuels? Somehow I just can't envision a wood stove on every balcony.

Big Oil reduced our refineries in order to have what you have today.
control of gasoline pricing in Canada and America.

Americans get cheap Canadian oil and deliver cheaper gasoline to it's people.

Canadian oil shipped to the states and then gouges Canadians at the pumps.

how many refineries were closed down in Canada in order to have this outcome.

Keystone is political , it will eventually become a reality, and Canadians will be screwed over further.

We need a Chretien to stand up to these people. He did . And Pierre created petro Canada and it's refineries , which i worked in at one time, so we would not be suffering at each fill up . Mulroney sold off petro Canada to America.

just a few thoughts on the matter folks.

that formula only works if the people in the USofA did not pay any taxes on their gasoline.
They do , so this is a flawed position. the taxes have not been raised in Canada on gasoline in a long time , and yet we were paying 65cents a litre not so long ago ...in dog years , but hey it wasn't that long ago. the taxes have been the same.

How much tax do we pay on a gallon of gasoline and diesel fuel? - FAQ - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

I know. GST/PST are on top of fed and provincial taxes. They tax the tax.

It's just that you blamed our taxes on the cost of gasoline going higher, as if the Americans do not pay taxes on gasoline at the pumps.

We all know we have higher taxes than America .

You are skewing the rise in gasoline price gouging going on here in Canada for the wrong reasons.

the taxes have remained the same as the prices climb to record levels for arcane reasons that the Big Oil people give us.

It all comes down to control over our oil.

The oil is nothing till it is refined.
