And So It Begins:

New York’s SAFE Act is a bad, bad thing. It requires people to register, sell or transfer (out of state) “assault rifles” and “high capacity” magazines. Many Empire State gun and standard capacity ammunition magazine owners have complied. Many have not. So, at some point, the State’s gonna go get ‘em. People on both sides of the law enforcement divide will die and the s will hit the fan. Meanwhile, there it is: the reason why expanded background checks, indeed all background checks and any type of registration, set the stage for confiscation. And tyranny. [ED: This notice was sent for New York City residents, based on New York City laws, not necessarily SAFE Act provisions.]

First of all the gun laws are misleading however at the same time who needs an assault rifle.
High magazine ammo for assault rifles are not required either these weapons are for hunting
people not hunting game. This nonsense about not complying with the law has led to more
laws. It is time to have a serious discussion about weapons and which ones are in and out
while fanatics rule on both sides common sense doesn't have a chance.
I don't subscribe to total gun control but some weapons should not be on the street and those
should be the ones taken not the rest.

What the heck is an assault weapon?

Generally, a military rifle characterised by selectable semi-automatic or automatic fire, a detachable box magazine holding 20 or more rounds, a short barrel (18 to 22 inches), and a flash suppressor.

Politically, it means any rifle lefties don't like, or in the case of the Washington Navy Yard, a shotgun. Usually modified by the adjective "high-powered."

I didn't see any mention of compensation for weapons that were previously legal and now by the stroke of a bureaucratic pen are illegal. Isn't that part of what the US had their little revolution about?
