Two decades after President Bill Clinton promised to "end welfare as we know it," Americans blame government handouts for persistent poverty in the United States more than any other single factor, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Thursday.

Given a list of eight factors and asked to choose the one most responsible for the continuing problem of poverty, 24 percent of respondents in the poll chose "too much government welfare that prevents initiative."

Whether Americans are too dependent on government was a flashpoint of the presidential campaign last year, and shrinking government has been a focus of the Tea Party movement, which has risen since the election of President Barack Obama.

People so often point to the jobs lost and that is part of the problem. The real problem from that
is the knowledge of how to do those jobs is lost. Factory workers and producer of industrial value
are skills learned over time. When they are gone its takes nearly a generation to redevelop the
skill required to be top of the class.
Welfare is not the problem its the result of dismantling the consumer industrial complex for a bigger
profit margin. There are a host of other problems confronting America as well. Here it should be
pointed out that Canada and other western nations face the same difficulties. because of political
and business Stupidity. Its not the workers and the average guy its the greed of companies and
the compliance of elected officials. Some say oh we should all work for less, but they all mean
the other guy should work for less, hell our standard of living should be maintained and we should
be working to raise the level of other nations not reduction to a lower standard.
Remember the five dollar shirt rack where you got a real bargain, that is the biggest part of the
problem. While you complain you buy the products the scoundrels continue to produce that cut

Oh please... spare me. Obese people are now a protected victim class in the US. You can surely get obese from eating an abundance of good food. You will not get obese from eating an occasional meal from Wendy's... i.e bad food.

Obesity is from eating way too much food than you are burning. And our poor obese class...It is also from choosing to use food stamps in fast food joints for the speed meal so you don't have to cook and have more time to be lazy.

Our poor in the US do not hunger, all is provided for free. If any kid goes to bed hungry it is the parent's fault. I would bet those children that hunger have a house full of food... they just wanted their Fourth Meal from Taco Bell and mom was down at the bar.

Just when I thought you had posted the dumbest thing ever you surpass yourself again. My daughter just returned from an extended stay in Bangladesh working with the poorest of the poor. And the Democrats don't go to the people... they just take. Our Governor thinks we should be taxed more instead of fixing the welfare problem. He doesn't believe there is a problem at all.

Welfare definitely is a problem. But not sure if it is the cause of poverty. Maybe if they did away with welfare the working person might have more of his earnings from work to him/herself.
Would be nice to see welfare taken out of our system as well. Then the lazy would be forced to work. Funny that people on welfare spend more at the fast food places, casinos, and bingo!

Our DTS is filled with fraud, abuse, and mismanagement top to bottom. Paying out millions to the dead... EBT cards (welfare) being used in vacation hot spots, US territories for long periods of time, SNAP cards being cashed out our used in whole numbers (how many times to you get a whole dollar amount at a market? i.e $50.00). The list goes on and on. Heck up until recently you could buy tattoos and use EBT cards at spas and salons. AND they were being used frequently in those places. How about that... a taxpayer funded tattoo and spa treatment! Happy searching!

There is PLENTY of money in SNAP and welfare to eat healthy. The notion that there isn't enough SNAP money to buy healthy food is a myth. I see shopping carts full of junk all paid for with a SNAP card. Chips, soda, frozen pizzas... junk processed food.

That is no excuse to not being able to cook. Cooking is not hard but it requires time and effort. Time and effort which cuts into their leisure time.

People who are on disability and who truly need help are not the problems. The problem lies in the ones who are perfectly healthy and have chosen to live off the state and federal government and not work. They have been provided a living that discourages work.

I could right now quit my job and become dependent upon the state and feds and never go hungry and always have a roof over my head with plenty of spending cash for entertainment. And there is not a thing that the government or the taxpayers can do to stop me.
