CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- City of Maricopa residents gave Ak-Chin Indian Community officials a standing ovation when it was announced the tribe is donating $2.6 million to Maricopa's financially struggling school district.

Then jaws dropped when it was announced at the City Council meeting Tuesday night that the tribe will give $7.4 million to the Pinal County city for its recreation complex.

According to the Casa Grande Dispatch, the school district has been scrambling to find ways to cut spending to close a budget shortfall.

Tribal Council Chairman Louis Manuel Jr. said the tribe was concerned about how the school district's financial troubles would affect the several hundred Ak-Chin students.

Maricopa Mayor Christian Price said the donation for the recreation complex will be used to pay for operating the facility. Voter-approved bonds financed its construction.
