Republicans enraged after HBO’s ‘Girls’ star Lena Dunham films ‘virginity’ ad for Obama

Can Lena Dunham, the 26-year-old creator and star of HBO’s “Girls,” do anything without enraging half the population?

Dunham cut an ad for the Obama campaign that was uploaded to YouTube Thursday in which she cheekily discusses her “first time” (voting for Obama, that is — get it?) and encourages young women to vote for the president because of his support for women’s rights.

Your first time “shouldn’t be with just anybody,” Dunham says in the ad, adding it should be with “someone who really cares about and understands women.”

Many Republicans, to say the least, are not fans of Dunham’s controversial brand of humour.

Erick Erickson, a CNN contributor and editor-in-chief of Redstate.com, went off on a long Twitter rant about the ad Thursday.

If you need any further proof we live in a fallen world destined for hell fire, consider the number of people who have no problem with the President of the United States, via a campaign ad, ridiculing virgins and comparing sex to voting,” he later added on Redstate.com.

Ben Shapiro of Big Government was particularly incensed with the video, wondering how Obama could approve the commercial while being a father of two young daughters.

“So she chose to do it for the first time with Barack Obama, since he ‘cares about and understands women.’ In fact, he understands them so well that he exploits them for insane commercials comparing losing your virginity with voting,” he wrote.

“Obama has young daughters. But that didn’t stop him from releasing this commercial. Because this is what Obama thinks of your daughters.”

Conservative radio host Monica Crowley sounded a similar note, calling the ad “depraved” on Twitter.

The deputy chair of the Minnesota Republican Party, Kelly Fenton, tweeted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had a similar ad and, therefore, he and Obama shared the same advisor — Satan.
The tweet appears to have since been deleted.

Obama long held a strong lead over Mitt Romney among women, but that lead appears to have vanished in recent days, according to a new poll.

However, that poll was taken before the latest GOP “rape” comment controversy, as a Romney-endorsed candidate said pregnancies that result from rape are “something God intended.”

Slate magazine suggested the Obama campaign could be trolling with the new Dunham ad to incite Republicans into working themselves in a lather and saying something stupid.

What's worse than the Obama as is that some people really like it. We do live in a fallen, depraved world destined for the fire. Erick Erickson

Obama puts out ad comparing voting for him to losing ur virginity. His problem is many treat 2008 as 1 night stand they'd prefer 2 forget. Erick Erickson

I'm not exactly sure what the outrage is about...

Do they see sex as something more important than voting and so don't like to see sex so degraded?

Or do they see sex as something vulgar and do not like to see voting so degraded?

Either way, they are putting something up on a pedestal that just doesn't belong there.

Why these idiots can't give it a rest. It is not like republicans have never put out an ad that offends some people. In fact they are the masters of derogatory attack ads. At least this one has some humour and doesn't call Romney an a$$hole or moron or anything.

The whole campaign ad issue is really a matter of living in glass houses for both sides. In fact the whole campaign system is a matter of glass houses. Both sides are equally at fault for being ignorant and insensitive and inconsiderate so any complaining should really only be done by the voters at how these campaigns think it is acceptable to try to manipulate the minds of the citizens.

I doubt the point was to goad Republicans into saying something stupid and offensive to women as that's already happened many times in this election campaign on the topics of rape and abortion. Could women be more offended?

The ad is clever and funny.

These "adults" - Hollywood-style inflated ones, at that (unlike those *ahem* nut-jobs who view the movie world as real policy) do understand what the acting guild's all about, don't they?

Lighten up and stop taking yourselves so seriously....

That's a tired argument redressed as parody. The only #moreFreeCrap discussed is "Free" birth control with a hint that maybe free abortions are coming. Given that the individuals are paying for the insurance which is to cover it, that is hardly free.

Actually, under Romney's repeal of the Affordable Care Act where he leaves in the clause where existing preconditions cannot preclude someone from being insured then you could get health care basically for free: just wait until you get sick, then sign the form on the way to the hospital. Once your care is paid for, just drop the insurance. You would be foolish not to act in that manner, if that was the state of the legislation.

While the parody is quite amusing the message is completely bogus. Unless you live in a cave and fend for yourself off the land we ALL pay some type of taxes. Sales taxes, taxes on utilities, gas taxes etc, etc. Even a 6 year old buying candy with their allowance is paying a tax on it so really there is NO free stuff from the govt. Some of us pay more taxes than others so the sh*t is more expensive to us but nobody is getting the FREE ride like some would try to make you believe.

Yeah, but it's a federal election, so only federal taxes are in play here.
