GOP Convention's "We built it" attack on Obama Has Strange Example

Sher Valenzuela may not have been the best choice to deliver the Republican Convention's "We built it" attack on President Obama for supposedly dissing small business owners in a speech July 13. In fact, Valenzuela's experience turning her shoestring business into a 40-employee company provide a perfect example of what Obama was actually talking about but that Fox News ginned into a twisted version of his remarks.

Fox truncated what Obama said that day into "If you've got a business, you didn't build that." He actually made the remark in the context of "this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive," pointing out that "Somebody invested in those roads and bridges." His perfectly accurate comments would have been unremarkable had Fox's propaganda team not sculpted them into something they were not and spent 42 segments totaling more than two hours of air time transforming them into a phony scandal. Republicans from the top of the ticket on down have been capitalizing on Fox's fabrication ever since.

Together with her husband, Valenzeula, who is running for lieutenant governor of Delaware, started an upholstery business out of their garage, making padding for baseball umpires and military vests. For her to properly perform her role promoting the Fox-fueled lie at the convention, she will have to avoid mentioning that her little company—First State Manufacturing—did exactly what Obama was talking about. It depended on a combination of personal hard work and government assistance to become successful. In fact, Valenzuela herself has given a presentation making note of that assistance and crediting the use of "millions of dollars in secure government contracts."

First State Manufacturing got its feet on the ground with an initial $20,000 loan from the Small Business Administration.

• In 2001, it obtained another $96,500 from the SBA when the company "was ready to grow again."

• It got another $65,800 disaster loan to deal with business fall-out from the Sept. 11 attacks.

• FSM's 40 employees now work out of facility funded by a $1.8 million SBA 504 loan.

• Since it began operations, FSM has received $15 million in federal contracts two-thirds of which were obtained non-competitively. In fiscal 2012 alone, the company has received more than half a million dollars in government contracts with the Air Force and defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin.

Valenzuela's business thrives on government help. Couldn't live without it. She also obviously believes that it's not just the federal government that helps business, but local as well since she is chairwoman of the Economic Development Advisory Panel for the City of Milford.

Taking note of any of this from the podium in Tampa, however, would remove some of the perfume from the Republicans' "We built it" manure pile. So don't expect to hear a word about it.

These are actions of desperate people trying to make the American people even
more desperate. Everything about the Republican Party is off center this time
round. It is like the real Republicans are on holiday in Jamaica while the misfits
are operating the leavers of power. Look at the uphill struggle confronting the
Romney campaign.

1 The religious whack jobs have a key role.
2 The fringe Tea Party has gained control of American right of center politics.
3 The bigots are out in force and the social agenda crowd outside of religion
are out in force.
4 The news outlets are like fox are not as effective as in the past because the
average voter and other media are looking more closely at what they report.

I think genuine conservative voters and some of the more important leadership
groups are embarrassed at what is going on. Its too bad, they could be providing
some serious debate and instead they are behaving like a fringe group

Grump, you have zero insight into American conservatives. There is a process of radicalization going on that is simply beyond the experience of any Canadian.

Conservatives represent one half of the American people. You must realize that things will never again be the same in America.

The American left changed fundamentally during the period between the assassination of Kennedy and Watergate. The same thing is now happening to American conservatives.

The result is that there is no common ground or room for compromise between the American left and the American right. This won't end well for America.

Just stand back and watch. This is not something that any non-American can influence or truly understand.

Not at all, have property down there, starting up a new company in the USA to take advantage of the lower taxes.. just think Canada has it's own problems and focusing on a country that you can't even vote to make a difference.. well it just makes your views and statements about Obama or Romney sorta null and void.

Canada needs to worry about infrastructure (new roads, hospitals), immigration, and so many other issues.. this is a Canadian forum after all.. it would be nice to see more about Canadian politics.

Just say'in. Could be wrong..

US Politics are important to not only Canada but the world- they set the tone - Obama standing back on Libya and letting the EU- Canada take the lead was a change in Foreign Policy- Also many are not aware but the US pays 75 % of NATO's bills- The focus now is on Asia and a rising and soon to be belligerent China.

There is no American left, if he was here Obama would be a right wing liberal the
same as Canadian Mainstream Tories as it were. There are two right wing parties
The Republicans are a fringe right wing group of late steeped in religion and some
how the Holy Spirit is going to save them.
There are also mainstream fiscal conservatives that are not into the social agenda
Two directions within on party.
In Canada we have to collapse of the Liberal party that was not far from the Conservatives
until the extreme right took over the Progressive Conservative Party, they were once
called Reform with social conservative roots. Now we have the NDP which is moving closer
to the right or middle.
There is no left anymore for all intent and purposes

As I have said DG... you'd fit right in here with our Liberal Left. The only way you'd stand out is SOME of your conservative stances aren't left enough.

That is just a myth saying US Libs would be considered Canadian Conservatives.

Partly true. Many Democrats in the US would be right of our conservatives. Especially on social policy.

Way off the mark there GD - Your analysis is incorrect- led by bias and lack of information. Way of the mark on US politics. There is a radical US Left and Nancy Pelosi is that face - A hard left Politician who is as crooked as a dogs hind leg. She fukd it when she was placed as the lead person by Obama- She should have reached out- but did not- just played the typical game that many in the US despise. So he made a disaster of a choice- She is as divisive a politician as Newt is. 2 sides of the same coin

I am the most right wing person in America. I'm also an atheist who fully supports LGBTQ civil rights and is deeply conflicted on the subject of abortion. There is a new type of conservatism being born in America. It is based on reason and understanding. Insight is the watch word. American conservatism is a product of the unique American historical experience.

I think President Obama made his fundamental mistake in turning to health care instead of maintaining a focus on the economy. He assumed that once the Stimulus was passed he could turn his attention to other subjects. Then when he did turn to health care he put Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in charge.

To save America would require a govt. of national unity which totally eschews ideology. But how likely is that given American political culture. I am afraid things are just going to have to play themselves out.
