Server Processor Vs. Desktop Processor

Hello everyone,

I want to build a new system, and I was wondering just what the differences between a sever processor and a desktop processor are.

Would I see gaming performance decrease by using a Quad Server Core or a Quad Desktop Core?

I wanted to build a dual socket server core and have 8 physical cores.

Thoughts?

It depends on what you'll be using the system for. Using multiple processors designed to serve web pages might be a little overboard for a desktop PC you'd be using for word processing, email and facebook.

server processors may have a larger caches and may require more expensive ECC RAM. They also have increased power requirements than the desktop version.

For gaming, any mainstream Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad will do. What you need to worry about is the quality of your video card because that's where most of the processing happens.

head over to tomshardware.com and look for their gaming setups (top end, mid end, and low end) and you will find that you don't need a dual socket with 8 physical cores to play demanding games.
