As per the subject line-is it made from something else?

Or just highly refined dead dinos?

Curious mind wants to know.

A cursory search would indicate that it is derived from petroleum.

Wow that's really helpful-just like your usual posts here.

From the link-
Synthetic Oil vs. Conventional Oils
"Both types of engine oil are made from crude oil that comes from the ground. The difference is that synthetic oils undergo numerous additional highly-advanced distilling, refining, and purification processes ó and therefore are of a higher purity and quality than conventional mineral oils. This not only removes more impurities from the original crude, it also enables the engineering of the lubricantís individual molecules to be uniform and consistent, tailored to meet the specific high-performance demands of modern engines. These customized molecules provide higher levels of protection and performance, even in extreme conditions."

So as I said it's just refined dead dinos the synthetic moniker is just marketing.

Sorry, but petroleum is dead foliage primarily.

Actually some oils are truly synthetic. Piston engines use mostly synthetics and standard oils, but others like jet engines, mostly use purely synthetic oils because they have better chemical and mechanical qualities than crude derived oils do. Germany developed true synthetics during WW2 because of resource limitations.

That's not entirely true.
