Are there any technologies where you are actually consciously - perhaps happily - avoiding the latest and greatest?

For me, it's:
My TV set. I have a 27in picture tube tv. I dont watch it very often, so i am enjoying these last 10 years where I can finally buy a TV set for less than 200 dollars

My headset for my cellphone. It has wires instead of bluetooth. I find BT just doesn't deliver enough quality and volume for use in my vehicle. The good ol trusty wired ones are dirt cheap and they perform well.

My laptop: its a single core netbook running win 7 starter. It runs all of my business apps and it has good battery life.

My coffee machine. I had a tassimo, but i have gone back to a 4 cup maker for superstore. It allows me to grind my own coffee. Nabob and starbucks cant touch freshly ground coffee beans, imo.

I'm probably the only generation Y who doesn't own a cell phone, or an iPod.

Smartphone. I won't get one until data+voice plans are down to $40.

I'm not much on any of these modern gadgets, cordless phones are good for when you are waiting for an important call when Nature calls, cell phones are good for emergencies or when travelling. Computers are good for a few things, saves lots of postage stamps.

No cell phone, iPad, iPod, TV, Stereo, washer, dryer, dish washer... my iMac is my entire entertainment and communication center except for my antique push button phone with no caller ID, call waiting or anything else.

If I bought a new TV that would mean I'd have to lift that big ol glass thing and I just don't want to.

My cell phone is a simple one, no smartphone, have no need and no desire pay higher bills.

We have a tassimo at work, I prefer a drip type coffee maker, that's what we have at home. And a french press for good coffee. I hate the tassimo, it makes average coffee, nothing special at all.

Saves a lot of time too, and paper.

Yeah, I forgot to mention ink!

Mine too and I'm on the cheapest plan - talk and pay.......$11.20 a month.

I sold my old record collection to someone who is obviously not interested in the 'latest and greatest', for roughly $10 per record.

I may end up buying an iPod AND an iPad with the proceeds.

One fancy modern innovation I do like is call blocker, one B was calling here all the time for son, after they split, she'd call several times a day, but made the mistake of calling after I went to bed, first thing next morning she was blocked. (it's easy to do right on line)

I already have the latest and greatest, and NOBODY will tale my eight-track from me, unless out of my cold, dead hands.

I like to have a fast, high quality computer and a semi-pro level DSLR, and of course a good quality photo printer to go along with them, so I do, but most of the rest of the stuff that's all the rage these days I don't have any use for. No iPad, no iPhone, no iPod, no Blackberry, no ebook reader, no Bluetooth headset, nothing of that sort. I have the cheapest cell phone plan I could find and the lowest grade of cell phone, a phone is ALL it is, and the only reason I have it is for emergencies, I've never used more than 10 minutes in a month. And that was when I broke a tooth and was trying to find a dentist in another city. I think I might get one of those little $300 10" Acer netbooks to travel with, so I can keep in touch with places like this, and my email, and backup my photos when I'm away, but I don't see a need for anything bigger than that.

My wife and I have 2 kids left at home. We all have Iphone 3gs with unlimited texting and a 1 gig data plan. My youngest and I each have netbooks and my wife and my other son each have dual core laptops. We have a dual core for a file and print server. There are 2 Xbox 360's and 2 Wii's in the house. A 46" LED with surround, 1 gig HDPVR. Plus an LCD TV with full meal deal cable in each of our bedrooms. GPS in our vehicle. All the computers and game boxes hooked up to the net through Shaw extreme.

So, no, I'm not avoiding anything. Never have, never will.

I got rid of my cell phone a few months ago. They are overpriced blackholes. Never owned an iPhone, Blackberry or any other even more overpriced mobile equipment.

No HDTV.

Probably a good idea, too much talking and not enough listening in the world today.

I bought exactly one of those instead of a full size laptop and I highly recommend them. The only thing I would suggest is get extra ram if your budget allows it.

Good advice alley, thanks. My budget, I'm glad to say, since the kids have left home allows for pretty much anything I want, and fortunately most of my wants are fairly modest. Good computer system (built it myself 3 years ago from components), good photo system (Nikon D200 with 18-200 mm and 70-300 mm VR lenses), some new books and music every month, a good vehicle every decade or so (currently an '06 RAV4, replacing a '93 Camry), and the rest of what I value most, and value much more than those little material things, my health, my wife, my children, my siblings, my friends, can't be bought at any price. Be nice to have another Nikon DSLR body so I don't have to switch lenses, but that's pretty trivial in the larger picture of what's important.

For me it's not so much that I consciously avoid the latest and greatest techonolgies, I just have a tendency to wait and assess the potential value of owning it. But I'm not specifically adverse to any of it.

I have a cell phone simply because my mother is in ill health and somewhat dependent upon me, so I need to be available at all times. I went with a Blackberry a year and a half ago because my daughter lives about 6 hours away and we tend to communicate daily by text (after texting for 3 years on a regular cell phone, I was desparate for a qwerty keyboard, lol). I went with the 1G data shared plan with my daughter because, once bundled with the other services from my cable provider, it essentially cost me the same amount as my old cell phone+text plan with Telus. I also make good use of it for email. For me the cost is worth it.

I have my daughter's old iPod (rarely use it), an LCD flat screen TV (don't bother with HD), no blue ray, no pvr-just don't feel the need for it.

I do have a Wii (it was a gift) and a Kuerig coffee maker (for which I've purchased the reusable filters-allowing me to use my own coffee instead of the prepacked ones).

I'm currently considering either a tablet (iPad or other) or a netbook (for greater portabilty than my laptop) but otherwise I don't really feel like I'm missing anything.
