The Americans may think the tedious Super Bowl, which takes place tonight, is the greatest sporting show on Earth, but they have probably never followed Premier League football. More specifically, they probably didn't follow it yesterday.

Yesterday saw an incredible 41 goals scored in English football's top flight in eight matches (an average of just over 5 goals per game), the most ever scored in one day in the Premier League since it started in season 1992/93, and what incredible entertainment it gave us.

One match especially demonstrated why the English Premier League is the most-watched football league in the world. Arsenal must have thought they had victory in the bag after going 4-0 up against Newcastle United after just 26 minutes. However, they weren't expecting a miraculous fightback by the Magpies in the second half which saw the match somehow finish 4-4. Newcastle would actually have won the match 5-4 if they hadn't wrongly had a goal disallowed for offiside!

Frenchman Louis Saha scored his first-ever Premier League hat-trick as Everton beat Blackpool 5-3 in an incredible thriller. He then scored another goal as Everton came back from 3-2 down. The Wigan Athletic VS Blackburn Rovers match had seven goals - Wigan won 4-3.

In more "normal" matches, meanwhile, Stoke City beat Sunderland 3-2, Aston Villa and Fulham drew 2-2 and Tottenham Hotspur beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1. And there may have been only three goals in the Wolves VS Manchester United match but it was still very dramatic in the sense that Wolves, who were then bottom of the table, suprisingly defeated top of the table Manchester United 2-1 to give the Red Devils their first defeat of the season in the Premier League, and so ending Manchester United's hopes of going through the entire Premier League season unbeaten as Arsenal's "Incredibles" did in season 2003/04. Mighty United had been unbeaten for 29 games in the Premier League.

In fact, it was the second time this season that the record for most Premier League goals scored in one day has been broken. The previous record was the 36 which were scored on 27th November.
