Interesting article outlining the cost of winning for one of the most celebrated athletes at the 2010 games. The Lindsay Vonn experience resembles that suffered by many of the East German and other athletes from communist countries during the Cold War.

Golden promise, base-metal reality

It is nice to win, but for every Lindsay Vonn who goes on to fame and fortune there are thousands of athletes who undergo similar training and get nothing.

that is the cost of striving for years to be the best in
almost anything, when the competition is fierce. eg.
acting, and almost all professional sports, and musical
groups and bands as well.

Vonn benefits because she learned very early on how to market herself.....

Who wouldn't buy into that?
