There was action in the 4th Round of the Carling Cup last night. Blackburn Rovers, who are missing a few players as they have swine flu, thrashed lower division Peterborough United (whose manager Darren Ferguson is the son of the Manchester United manager Sir Alex) 5-2.

A beleagured Portsmouth, sitting rock bottom of the Premier League, beat fellow Premier League side Stoke City 4-0.

And Tottenham Hotspur continued there good run of form by winning 2-0 against Everton.

And holders Manchester United, who beat Tottenham in last season's final, beat Barnsley 2-0. But the game was marred by crowd violence. Seven fans were arrested after trouble started during the match at Barnsley's Oakwell stadium.

Eight catering staff were trapped inside a food kiosk and had to barricade themselves in a store room for around 25 minutes as fans broke in and stole cash from the till and food from the shelves.

Police in riot gear were pelted with bottles as they attempted to restore order, and police dogs had to be called in to rid the pitch of fans. At least one fan ran onto the pitch and kicked the ball into the net.

Barnsley have blamed the trashing and looting of the food kiosk on Manchester United fans.

The Football Association have confirmed they are investigating last night's scenes at Barnsley's Oakwell ground where fans were arrested after violence broke out and catering stands were ransacked during Manchester United's Carling Cup tie.

Seven arrests were made at the match at Oakwell after trouble flared at around 8.30pm yesterday, a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said.

Eight catering staff were trapped inside a food kiosk and had to barricade themselves in a store room for around 25 minutes as fans broke in and stole cash from the till and food from the shelves.

Stewards on the pitch also had food thrown at them during the violence, marring United's 2-0 fourth-round win.

The spokesman said: 'No-one was injured during this time but one police officer later suffered a minor facial injury.'

A heavy on-pitch police presence was visible during the trouble. Police in riot gear were pelted with bottles as they attempted to restore order in the concourse of the north stand and police dogs were employed to drive fans back from the pitch.

The police spokesman also said that around 11pm two more people were arrested after fans jumped on to railway tracks in a bid to stop the Barnsley to Sheffield train before it had started moving.

Barnsley said last night they would launch an investigation into the violence, accusing Manchester United fans of causing 'substantial damage' at the stadium.

The club has complained to police, who are to carry out their own inquiry into the incident.

A Barnsley spokesman said: 'The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand.

Surrounded: Fans at the United end are shown a heavy police presence

'A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further.

The spokesman added: 'Scene of crime officers are down here now going through the North Stand and we're proceeding with our own investigation as well.

Standing guard: Police, some in riot gear, overshadow the action between Barnsley and Manchester United

'It's a hell of a mess down there. Doors have been kicked in, tills have been damaged and there's food and drink everywhere. It looks like a swamp in one of the bars.'

An FA spokesperson said: 'There is no place for anti-social or violent behaviour in our game. Any culprit found to be involved in these disturbances and identified as such by either the police or clubs should be subject to a lengthy ban from attending football matches.'
