Newcastle United have unveiled their new away kit for the 2009/10 season - yellow and striped.

Newcastle United - nicknamed the "Toon" - were relegated from England's top-flight division this year after being in it since 1993.

Their home kit is the famous black-and-white stripes.

Next year they will only play in the second tier - the Championship - so, luckily for those who hate the kit, it may not be seen on TV screens and newspapers as often.

Needless to say, fans of local rivals Sunderland, who managed to avoid relegation from the top-flight, have been poking fun at hapless Newcastle.

One said: "Bananas in pyjamas are going down the league; bananas in pyjamas are trying to look like Leeds!!!"

Meanwhile, we may finally know what Manchester United's new home kit looks like.

This year marks the centenary of the team's Old Trafford stadium, so the new kit looks similar to one worn by the Manchester United team which won the FA Cup for the first time in its history in 1909.

Darkened "teaser" pictured have been released of the new kits, but when brightened up they reveal that the red kits have a black "V" on the chest.

In the 1909 FA Cup Final against Bristol City, Manchester Unted wore a white shirt with a red "V" on the chest, sporting a badge featuring the Red Rose of Lancashire.

The strip, described on the club's own website as a "stylish new change kit", but Newcastle fans might be wishing the club had retained their unobtrusive plain blue second kit, especially if the players are unable to improve on their Premier League results in the second division of English football.

The two-tone yellow change, made by adidas, has already received criticism from the Tyneside faithful with Mark Jensen, editor of The Mag, the club's fanzine saying: "It's certainly different! My take on kits is that as long as they're not red and white stripes (Sunderland's colours), I'm not really that bothered.

"There's certainly no chance of them getting lost in the snow when we play Barnsley in December.

"I suppose the problem the club has when they bring a new away kit out every year is how to make each one stand out. But they've certainly managed it this time!"
Other fans have been less generous with Stephen Buchan, of Consett, saying: "It's awful. It reminds me of a deckchair on Blackpool beach.

"At a time when NUFC need all the money they can get, they go and release a kit that Mike Ashley would probably struggle to sell at rock bottom price in one of his cheap clothing outlets.

"It's not as though we fans have been made to look stupid enough without being asked to fork out good money to wear something as awful as that."

Supporters of local rivals Sunderland, who avoided the drop from the Premier League, are revelling in the appearance of the new shirt, with one, Ryan Jenkins, saying: "It really is appalling. I love it.

"It looks like Norwich and Blackpool got into a fight and this was the leftovers.

Newcastle will have to call themselves the Toongerines."

Another anonymous comment chanted: "Bananas in pyjamas are going down the league; bananas in pyjamas are trying to look like Leeds!!!"

Manchester United's new home kit revealed by teaser images

Is this Manchester United's new home kit for next season? We have brightened up images released to tease Nike's new kit for the 2009/10 season.

New look: this image of Park Ji-Sung clearly shows the distinctive black stripe across the chest and matching black collar

Success: the centenary kit will be expected to sell well

Design: Rio Ferdinand models the new kit, which has white shorts with a thick red stripe

Inspiration: United's 1909 FA Cup final strip also features a v-shaped stripe across the chest

Original: the images reveal little about the design until lightened by software

Lace up: Manchester United's more outlandish protype kit

Media outlets today received these "official Nike teaser images" ahead of the launch on July 1. These images are in semi-darkness, and reveal little about the new design.

However, by using software to lighten the images, we have identified the characteristics of the new kit, as seen above.

A black 'v-shape' stripe features on the shirt's chest, which also features a black round-neck collar. The stripe is reminiscent of shirts worn by Manchester United during the 1908-09 season, when they reached the FA Cup final.

"The new Manchester United home kit has been designed by Nike to recognise the clubs glorious history at Old Trafford in the ground’s centenary year and features several design cues that pay homage to the side that first played at the Theatre of Dreams," read a release issued on behalf of Nike.

The socks are black but appear to have a red V stretching around the back, similar to the V on the front of the shirt. The white shorts have a thick red stripe running down the outside.

The teaser images still carry the logo of AIG, the American insurance giants, whose contract with the Premier League champions expires at the end of next season.

In March we published leaked pictures of a possible prototype kit which carried a red V on a white shirt.
