Oldham Athletic have stunned the world of football by introducing an all-pink kit. But they aren't turning into a bunch of nancy boys. The team, who are flying high in League One (the third tier out of four tiers of the 92 professional teams of English football) will wear it just once (in a league match against Leeds United) to raise money for a breast cancer unit.

Though it isn't the first time a team representing the Greater Manchester town has worn pink - in July, Oldham rugby league team wore all pink for charity.

THEY pink it’s all over... and it is now for high-flying Oldham Athletic.

The League One team are set to stun soccer – and hundreds of thousands of TV fans – by wearing an all-pink strip for a crucial match next month.

Players will don pink shirts, shorts and socks when they take on Leeds United at Boundary Park on March 2.

The lads are expecting a fair bit of stick from the Yorkshire club’s supporters but are prepared to grin and bare it in a bid to raise money for a breast cancer unit.

A bumper crowd of 10,000 is expected for the match – plus a TV audience watching on Sky Sports.

Charity

Last night Oldham captain Sean Gregan, 34, who used to play for Leeds, said: “It’s a great cause and the players are all delighted to back it.

“The kit looks better than I imagined when I heard about it. Maybe we’ll get some stick from the Leeds fans but that’ll just spur us on even more.

“If Leeds think we’re a soft touch then they’ll soon find out otherwise come kick-off time.”

Instead of chanting, "Come on you Blues," – Oldham usually play in blue and white – fans will sing "Come on you Pinks" for one day only.

Chief executive Alan Hardy said the club were delighted to raise funds towards the £250,000 needed for improvements at the Victoria Breast Unit at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

He added: “It’s a fantastic cause. We would urge all supporters to get behind us as we look to raise as much money as possible for the breast care team.

"They give so much to the local community.”

After the match, the pink kits will be auctioned off on the club’s website.

Maria Bramley, a consultant surgeon at the unit, described the pink strip initiative as “exciting and unique”.

But it is not the first time one of the town’s sports teams has gone for a pink makeover.

Last July Oldham Rugby League Club swapped their red and white colours for a pink number in aid of a hospice

Many years ago former boxing champion 'Macho' Camacho wore pink trunks into the ring.

And you as a Brit likely remember when the Windies cricket team won the WC in pink jerseys.

Yes, REAL men wear pink!
